D&D General How you would have done the Dungeons and Dragons' movie - 80's edition

If we didn't manage the full-on Gothic horror of the setting, we at least approached Castlevania levels. Which, I suspect is not an uncommon approach for Ravenloft. Gah, Kull the Conqueror! What makes Kull such an interesting character is his moodiness, philosophy, and yes, depression. All...

D&D General How you would have done the Dungeons and Dragons' movie - 80's edition

Same. Seeing that movie at the age of seven was...quite impactful. I still re-watch it every couple of years.

D&D General How you would have done the Dungeons and Dragons' movie - 80's edition

A distance of eight years between books is a long time. Vampire of the Mist was quite good, and held up pretty well when I re-read it a while ago. Dance of the Dead was quite well done. If I ever do a Ravenloft campaign again, I absolutely plan on running an updated Night of the Walking Dead...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

To their thinking, the new generation of D&D players are "No True D&D players." As @Wincenworks pointed out, the train of logic on how this strategy succeeds gets somewhat murky, to put it kindly.

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

That is the thing - it's a fight for the narrative. Considering how the demographics of D&D have changed in recent years, they cannot win the battle for the future. So they instead squabble over the past, the legacy, to try to give their retrograde ideas a shred of legitimacy. For the record...

What are you reading in 2024?

Chatanists. Yes, yes it did. Dr. Lawrence Pazder would go on to act as a consultant in the McMartin Case, which sent innocent people to prison. That is one of the many things about Michelle Smith's story - how anyone could believe that a five-year-old could know the exact dates of these...

    OSR BrOSR

This Jew certainly enjoys the heck out of Lord Dunsany, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, Manly Wade Wellman, and Poul Anderson. Truth and the far-right are not well acquainted.

Edgerunners Mission Kit Dips A Chrome Toe Into the World of Cyberpunk 2077

It's a sharp product, to be sure, marrying the mechanics of Red with the world and technology of Edgerunners (not to mention art taken directly from the anime). I'm planning on integrating parts of it into my Cyberpunk Red campaign. But to run a full campaign set in the 2076/77 time frame, I...

What are you reading in 2024?

I finished reading Michelle Remembers, by Michelle Smith and Lawrence Pazder. How do you review such a book? It is a book that is a litany of abuse and terrible things. It gets quite unpleasant to read in spots. But it is also unequivocally and demonstrable false. Michelle's story is easily...

D&D General BBC archive videos of people playing D&D in the 1980s

I highly recommend following the BBC Archive on social media. You never know whether you're going to see a video about a hair salon from the 90s, a hippie commune from the 60s, or a clip of model tank enthusiasts from the 70s.

    RPG Evolution: Inspiration from Edinburgh

Touring the underground of Edinburgh was very cool. It's not hard to imagine what it was like, with people living and working down there. Also, lots of steps and slopes. I walked very carefully there.

What are you reading in 2024?

Curiada has been a game changer for me. I love this stuff in cocktails: Rothman & Winter Apricot Liqueur: Elegance & Fruitfulness in Every Sip | Curiada As for Pusser's, it was probably a decade from when I first heard about it until I was actually able to get a bottle while I was in the...

What are you reading in 2024?

Yeah, as much as you get some really nice cocktails by adding fancy homemade syrups, it takes work, and you're often just making one for just that cocktail. Like, how many cocktails are going to use chamomile-infused simple syrup (I know of about two)? The Tiffany Aching books are really good...

    Dragon Reflections #82

Sound advice, given the time. Back then you would've been as likely to get advice such as "run Tomb of Horrors," disintegrate all their gear, send them to a plane where magic doesn't work, or flat-out kill their characters.

Mothership - Who Is Ready to Throw Someone Out an Airlock?

Played it at a con and by the end of the adventure everyone was mad and/or possessed. It was outstanding. It does such a great job of evoking the tropes of the sci-fi horror genre.

What are you reading in 2024?

I finished reading Manly Wade Wellman's The Lost and The Lurking. Good stuff. It mentions more of John's past adventures, giving it a strong sense of continuity. Though I had to re-picture John the Balladeer, as I always pictured him with lighter hair, and this explicitly describes his hair as...

What would be in your perfect Halloween setting?

Some sort of carved Jack-o-Lantern is a must for Halloween adventures I run, if I can fit them in. Although, looking at my Cyberpunk Red games, I realize that they'll have to be cheap plastic blow molds, since no one but the very wealthy would even have pumpkins to carve in Night City.

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

Running a proper horror game requires a whole lot of trust and buy-in, to be sure. All games do to some extent, but the needs of horror are particularly greater. My groups never got to that level of power (unless you count running the pre-setting I6), but my recollection of the 2e books is that...

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

You can really tell he wasn't feeling it: Ravenloft took the heroic fantasy of D&D and upended it (something they did in a bunch of the 2e settings, really). Any victories the PCs might have were temporary. Evil could never be truly defeated in Ravenloft.
