What are you reading in 2024?

I discovered it pretty recently, when I was looking at Cyberpunk 2020's list of inspiring fiction. That white-washed cover is so bad; I got the book on Kindle specifically because it didn't have that cover.

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

Yeah, he's not going out without a struggle. But he is going out. His options slowly dwindle with each court case ruling against him. Like everything else in this saga, it's just taking forever.

    Ravenloft Novel Coming in 2025

Ravenloft had some pretty strong entries in D&D fiction, from what I recall. In a lot of ways they were so very different from the rest of the D&D fiction line. I remember the downbeat ending of Vampire of the Mist hitting me pretty hard. P.N. Elrod's I, Strahd could've been titled "Strahd Gets...

An appreciation for players who come up with great character names...

Picture it, I am nine years old in the 80s and trying to teach a bunch of kids how to play D&D. The one kid creates a character and when I ask him his characters name, he replies with: Ding Dong Farty Marty In the decades since, that has never been topped. But seriously, I always find it...

    Cocktails

Arguably, the true test of any whiskey is the Old Fashioned. I'd say split the difference then and go with the Vieux Carre, which contains both and is a lovely drink.

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

That is the truth of it. As much as we laughed with schadenfreude, The whole not-TSR saga caused real harm. People were targeted with hate speech, harassed, scammed, bilked, and subjected to frivolous legal actions. That the saga is slowly drawing to a close is a good thing. Completely stripped...

    Dragon Reflections #81

It's fascinating that throughout the history of Dragon magazine, articles like this that take certain mechanics in the game and try to "improve" on them by making them more complicated (see also any number of articles on falling damage). There very much was a thread of simulation through...

Same. My city has a bunch of brutalist buildings:

    Favorite Transformer?

It's hard to argue against Soundwave - a cassette player with that sweet vocoder voice. I also like the Constructicons' Mixmaster and Insecticons' Shrapnel (those bugs have some great designs). When I was a kid, I was mildly into Gobots, but have gotten moreso as an adult. That most of them...

ElfQuest TTRPG Returns For New Printing

While I remember seeing ads for the Elfquest RPG in Dragon magazine back in the day, I didn't get into the Elfquest comics until the early 00s, devouring the collections at my local library. Very excited for this Kickstarter.

What are you reading in 2024?

Finished Steven Barnes' Streetlethal. Great bit of cyberpunk fiction. Read Tom Muir's Orkney Folk Tales while I was on vacation. Also read a couple short stories by REH and PKD. Now I'm starting to get into the Halloween season with HPL's The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath (Ballantine Adult...

Trailer Atari 7800+ - Official Announcement Trailer

Considering the Atari Classics collections go for about $20 with tons of games on each, on a system a person probably already owns, yeah, that's a big ask.

Let it be said that addiction is a serious form of mental illness that requires professional treatment; this sounds like yet another terrible grift from him.

Geek Confessional Thread 2024 [NOW 2025!]

As far as I'm concerned, Interview and Lestat were good, Queen of the Damned was where it started to wobble, and everything else was downhill from there. It doesn't have vampires, but I loved Cry to Heaven.

D&D 5E (2014) Rise of Tiamat with a mostly not-Good party - looking for hooks

If they're treasure-motivated, there is the titular Hoard of the Dragon Queen. That's a powerful lever to use to get them to play ball with the factions if they want to find out where it is and how to get it.

    D&D 5E (2024) Dragon Delves

Love the burly, aggressive-looking white dragon. Hey, we've all designed dungeons in our time with 10' wide corridors and dragons in the larger chambers!

    Dragon Reflections #79

When I read the DMG back then, I might get bits and pieces, but at that age it was hard to completely encompass and understand the whole thing. Even today, you can get completely different rules depending on whether you go by the DMG or PHB - how backstab works, for example.
