How are melee characters expected to deal with flying creatures?

There's also the tried-and-true readied action, for Flyby Attack style melee fliers. "Ready [melee attack power that knocks prone] against the griffon when it enters melee range" or what have you.

Difficulty pulling images from Skeleton Key PDFs

Looks like this is a dead forum, but it seems like it'd be the most appropriate place. If this goes unnoticed, I'll see if I can find a forum with more traffic. I just bought a bunch of Skeleton Key maps, and would like to use the tiles in Maptool (RPTools - MapTool). But when I copy any of the...

    Slaying Action (Feat)

Hm? No, I think Klaus's analysis is correct on that one. The two Slaying Actions do work in concert, from what I can tell. ("these two" in my post referred to the quoted strategies in Caliban's post.)

    Slaying Action (Feat)

If the feat is worded as quoted, these two don't work, alas--the Slaying Action effect only works for the turn, not the round. (Unless, I suppose, you have means of making opportunity actions during your own turn or your buddy can grant you extra attacks during your turn.)

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

Sad but true. Internet forums like ENWorld tend to amplify the vocal minority. In turn, Hasbro/WotC are unlikely to feel much of an effect in profits or goodwill. This, however, is an unnecessarily belittling characterization of, e.g. people who would undertake a boycott on principle. Someone...

[Fiery Dragon] Counter Collection and BattleBox 4e now available

I gave this exact feedback to Jason Kempton, at Klaus's suggestion. Go ahead and email him! Maybe if enough customers express interest in such a thing, it'll look viable for a print run.

Is Aegis of Assault the worst mark?

I don't know if it's the worst mark, but it's certainly one of the most fun, to my mind. I'm playing a highly teleportation-oriented Eladrin Wandering Swordmage as a short-run Paragon Tier game, and whooshing across the battlefield to deliver a blow to the back of the head of some fool who dared...

    Unconscious Rage / Stance

Something similar to this topic came up in a game last night. We could find no reason to believe that a Swordmage's mark goes away when she's knocked unconscious. Can't act on it until you're back on your feet, but I guess the -2 is magical in nature rather than the "getting in your face /...

    Unconscious Rage / Stance

I could have sworn that powers with ongoing-effect keywords Stance and Rage ended when the user became unconscious. But the keywords as defined on PHB2 page 220 say only that they end at the end of the encounter or when you enter another stance/rage. Now, presumably if you're unconscious you...

    Misdirected Mark and Defenders

I agree with the OP's interpretation. ...But I'm also of the crowd that thinks it would be much much cooler if it worked the other way. ^.^ Maybe a Bard encounter power or daily could do such a thing (if you could figure out how to phrase it); it may be a bit much for an at-will. You don't...

    Now will OoTS switch?

I dropped it from my own Webcomic list not because I feel Burlew can't tell a serious story, but because I don't care for the pace he's chosen for it. Too much text for too little forward progress, strip to strip, for my tastes.

    Now will OoTS switch?

Didn't the author say at some point that it's not really about D&D jokes anymore, but more about the story and characters themselves? I could see a bit of humor getting squeezed out of an edition switch (Exalted: The Freedom Stone attempted as much just before it went belly-up), but if it...

    Forked Thread: Improved Encounter Builder

It'd be much more useful to have those things in the final encounter printout, though. Sure, I can pop each monster's statblock up, and meticulously copy it over and lay it out... but the Encounter Builder comes so close to making me not have to!

Forked Thread: Why the World Exists [GM-less Gaming]

Fair enough. You've made a strong point: the story games can't appropriate the terminology of the old school if the old school doesn't choose to give it up. (Only quibble being that I'm not sure I see what the "linguistic imperialism" snipe adds to the discussion.) So, my final post in the...

Forked Thread: Why the World Exists [GM-less Gaming]

I was more trying to figure out what counted as cheating for you. You and Korgoth fervently answered that--there has to be verifiable stuff behind the GM's screen, or else the GM is cheating. I'm a little bemused that small pieces of improv are OK but doing it across-the-board is not (and I've...

    Power Attack Q

When does a player have to choose whether or not to use Power Attack? Before they roll the d20? After they roll but before they're told whether or not they hit? Or anytime before dealing damage? (Which could lead to an odd "reverse Wand of Accuracy" situation, where I roll, hit, decide to...

Forked Thread: Why the World Exists [GM-less Gaming]

Ah. OK. The Battleship/Stratego example as illustrative of "playing a role" is helpful, I think. So the player and character need to have access to very similar sets of information for it to count as "playing a role" by your definition/preference. I guess I have a few questions, to see if I...

Forked Thread: Why the World Exists [GM-less Gaming]

I find the "exploration" objective a curious one, for various reasons: - The game world doesn't exist. The only "thing" you're learning about when exploring is a construct of the GM's imagination. Is there a special reverence toward the minds of people who make stuff up about trees and...

    PHB2: Meh.

It would have been nice if they at least gave you the NPC templates for all the new classes. I guess that's for DMG2, then...

Forked Thread: Why the World Exists [GM-less Gaming]

I'm not denying that it's fine to talk about different styles of play to keep communication clear and prevent mistaken assumptions. It makes perfect sense to say "GMless roleplaying" and "traditional roleplaying." I see them as subsets of the same kind of activity. Someone being denied the use...
