Mordenkainens Magnificent Emporium saved by last minute adventurers?

And while we're on the topic of fourthcore and rare items, the preeminent fourthcore blog Save Versus Death recently released a magic item PDF with some fantastic examples: the Fourthcore Armory. Another good place to look if you want to make the item rarity system work is the Square Fireballs...

    Feats, Feats, Feats

I do like this idea. Maybe build the pure math stuff (Expertise, Improved Defenses, Focus) into the level progression, then give combat feats (extra tricks, situational bonuses, etc.) at even levels and non-combat feats (skill trainings, ritual casting, languages, etc.) at odd levels?

Dragon 399 - Heroes of Tome and Temple

Initiative isn't an attack roll, saving throw, or skill check, so it's not part of the prediction.

Dragon 399 - Heroes of Tome and Temple

The problem taps into a deeper flaw with the system as a whole: there are are lots of rolls you can (or even must!) make that have very little consequence for failure. Other games come with rules to the effect of "only roll if both success and failure are possible, and the outcomes of both would...

    Dragon 399 - Ampersand

The Melee 10 attacks / Artillery designation aren't the stat block error. The recharge-when-bloodied power being exactly the same as the at-will power is.

Rules Cleanup - Weapons and Implements, Bonuses and Plusses

Have you seen the Magic Item Reset underway on the Square Fireballs blog? Some of the design ideas there might have useful insights for your project, and his list have a thing or two to crib.

Play Report: Revenge of the Iron Lich

Well, my players built a Radiant Mafia and pretty much obliterated the dungeon, scoring a "legendary" 835 points (they Imprisoned the lich). Mostly by chance, they took a very swift path through: A-B-D-E-I-E-J-K-M. This dodged the two heavy healing surge-draining encounters, meaning the Iron...

Purple Index Cards: On-the-Fly Setting and Plot Collaboration

I've been having trouble getting my ODT and PDF exports to work (the most recent version of OpenOffice seems to have broken Word file conversion), but if .docx will work for you, here's the most recent version: Purple Index Cards EDIT: Oh, hmm. Maybe there's a problem with the server. I'll...

    Twin Strike errata?

Fantastic. I busted up laughing at "the second one might kill the second it."

    Twin Strike errata?

Oh, man, five of them? I missed most of the fun, then. I only saw the one that said if both attacks hit it automatically dropped the target to 0 HP :P

    Mount questions

Oh, wow. I totally had not noticed that the mounts were priced so close to the value of a magic item of their own level. That's a very simple and effective way to go about it!

Purple Index Cards: On-the-Fly Setting and Plot Collaboration

Neat! Care to share the keyword effects, or at least some examples? On my edition of the card it'll be simply "collaborate with the DM to determine the exact effect", but I'm curious what you use as baseline. Fire does ongoing 5/tier fire damage (if the attack already caused ongoing fire, add to...

Purple Index Cards: On-the-Fly Setting and Plot Collaboration

Last session "Dammit, Butterfly..." drew the attention of the local fey onto the party Bard|Psion when he played a tune to open a Sigil-Feywild portal. Then he hit with that gorram Augment 2 Dishearten of his. That inspired me to add this to the deck: Drawing Aggro Play this card when you hit...

Play Report: Revenge of the Iron Lich

Thanks for the play report! I have some folks really interested in trying this out at the Forge Midwest gaming convention, so I'm looking forward to running it. Save Versus Death has come out with some great stuff, and seems poised to keep doing so.

    D&D 4E Good 4e Stuff from 3rd Party Publishers?

I'll second the vote for One Bad Egg. They have some quality stuff, and it's a shame they disbanded due to poor sales. I would have paid dearly for the planned follow-on book to the Codex Venenorum or to see more of the "Shroud" setting. I've had a lot of fun with material by Nosfecatu...

    Mount questions

One of the PCs in my game just acquired a Nightmare as a mount. It's stylistically fantastic for the character, but as I haven't had to mess with such things much before, it's introduced some new rules wrinkles for me. 1) The Nightmare has a teleport speed. There's text in the Mounted Combat...

April and Beyond: Actually full of things most people will like!

I'll chime in as also loving the Wandering Tower preview. My campaign involves various planar towers as a theme/ongoing quest... it'll be great to throw this fellow in as a red herring ^.^ Anyone else notice that the raven swarm doesn't have the usual swarm damage resistance/vulnerability...

    The CB is still crappy

At least on the old builder you could customize the text blurbs. No such luck with the new one. I actually rather like the Feats page they make available using the new character sheet layout--it's a lot easier to read--but some of the canned short descriptions are pretty useless.

Robert J. Schwalb Blog Discussion; Feats: Do We need them?

The main thing I want to see happen with feats is meaningful choice. When I look at a feat, I don't ever want to think "Why would I ever want this?" (e.g. most Tribal feats) or "Why would I ever not want this?" (e.g. ___ Expertise, Resilient Focus). Remove the cruft, and either remove the...

    Rethinking Feats

Extra feats of the bland-but-effective variety would also make nice rewards... they could tie well to an "Achievements" system or the like. Achievement Unlocked: Critical Save Rolled a natural 20 on a saving throw. Gained the Resilient Focus feat!
