D&D 4E Is 4E winning you or losing you?

That is true and for my style it is probably a good thing (for others, they may hate it). What that actually means I dont know so i have to use 'probably' But conflict can be many things up to and including player scene control as well. (eg. The difference between rolling a success and the...

D&D 4E Is 4E winning you or losing you?

And that is what i believe 4E will be giving you. I want nice rules for conflict (not necessarily combat) resolution and rules that can enhance the roleplaying and story elements that I find rewarding. I do not think 4E will provide these things and frankly since many people seem not to want...

    How powerful should magic be?

In a traditional fantasy setting it should be the most powerful force in the game. The wielders should have the ability to accomplish things that surpasses anything a non-magic wielder can. There should be significant drawbacks or prices to being able to use magic and to the act of using...

D&D 4E Is 4E winning you or losing you?

Losing me definitely. The enjoyment of D&D was basically in the nostalgia of the game. The more they kill the sacred cows the more it becomes less like the D&D I am familiar with. Paradoxically they do not seem to really be changing the basic structure of the game enough to really interest...

    D&D 4E 4E Rules first Role-Play second?

You are correct and far far more succint (i should just post a shortcut to your post). I think most people are a mixture with a significant number who are very heavily one or the other. And that game designs that can best make these two aspects symbiotic are advantageous to the game as a whole...

    D&D 4E 4E Rules first Role-Play second?

What is the pasta and what is the sauce i think has to be defined by the book and people who want one or the other chooses what book (game) that they want (ok analogy going too far)... But I think this is an important question and ties back to my initial question of roleplay vs game and how to...

    D&D 4E 4E Rules first Role-Play second?

I believe we differ on a very fundamental level. For me the RP is the important part..basically is the pasta (to continue your analogy..of course this always goes badly :heh: ) while the mechanics is just the heat and water that allow me to cook it. The mechanics are just a way to smooth and...

    D&D 4E 4E Rules first Role-Play second?

Question. What do you mean by 'Game?' (i mean this sincerely). When I think of a roleplaying game, i think of it as an activity that allows my group, jointly, to create interesting stories, where some persona I am playing is explored in a specific setting or environ (or i help facilitate the...

    D&D 4E 4E Rules first Role-Play second?

Doesn't a roleplaying game require roleplaying by definition ;) (totally kidding)

    D&D 4E 4E Rules first Role-Play second?

You bring up a very good point. I think the other games have other different mechanics than D&D. My thought was to bridge the high fantasy tactical D&D game with ways to improve the roleplaying experience. I was not thinking of completely overhauling the system, but instead enhancing the...

    D&D 4E 4E Rules first Role-Play second?

I think it would help to define what people mean by roleplaying and tying roleplaying into the mechanics. Frankly after having played indie games where roleplaying is tied intimately into the mechanics has convinced me that this is the best way to design a game. By roleplaying i do not mean...

    New Design: Wizards...

Strangely that is exactly how I took them. I thought of them more like just vague examples for some flavor and not some defined traditions that are a necessary part of play. I really liked in Gary's writing where he just would throw out some flavorful lore that was not necessarily part of a...

    New Design: Wizards...

I find it very gimmicky. I also kind of find it rather bland as well. I dont mind casters having to use foci, but it would have been better just to let the players decide what are the appropriate foci for their casters. It also removes the idea of the casters that throw lightning from their...

    D&D 4E 4E Rules first Role-Play second?

Shadow of Yesterday, Burning Wheel and Sorcerer actually has role-playing mechanics that I really like. I think roleplaying itself probably needs a better definition though. By role-playing i don't mean being a thespian but that the game centers, revolves around and rewards the specific goals...

    Reduced Magic Item Prevalence

Seems like stopping the arms race in the beginning is the most viable solution. Actually I think a possible solution (that you possibly alluded to) is that all magic items have drawbacks (increase your will save but your dex save decreases by a like amount...just an wild example off of the top...

    Reduced Magic Item Prevalence

Probably a misunderstanding in the way I posted but I think you can have magic items that do not involve stat boosting. You only need stat boosting items if the DC (AC etc.) of what you are trying to accomplish is escalating faster than the bonuses from your levels do. My post was responding...

    Reduced Magic Item Prevalence

If the modifiers already go up (as they presently do) as the characters level up, is there a need to boost the modifiers even further. Instead just remove the necessity for having to have the item based modifiers (lower DC/AC etc. of challenges). I could be missing something though.

D&D 4E 4e death of creative spell casting?

That is like Ars Magica. Though I am not so big into Niche protection. I could have a party of 5 wizards that can do roughly the same thing mechanically and be fine. Usually one would end up being slightly or more than slightly better (or better prepared) for some type of challenge vs another...

D&D 4E 4e death of creative spell casting?

I love Ars Magica. Actually when we played we rarely played the same type. Usually one player maybe two played a Mage and the rest played a grog or companion. One guy almost never played his mage and almost always played his grog or companion, they were more fun for him. I played my mage and...

D&D 4E 4e death of creative spell casting?

I think one of the biggest points is that the magic system of 4e will not universally be liked (not really a surprise as nothing is). I believe it will probably go in a direction that would make me disinterested in it at best. For others they will enjoy it and really like the changes, which is...
