    Are rogues marginalized by magic?

Depends the system. 3.5 probably yes since wands of X which can trump most skills are so easy to obtain. Earlier versions where spell slots are a lot more sacred and I would say no. That in individual instances yes but over the course of a story, no. Personally I think magic should have...

Games that didn't survive first contact. . .

Original Tunnels and Trolls. Combat was such that all players just added to the die pool which then went against the monsters total die pool. As such there was not individual actions incombat per se and everything was group combat except for spellcasting. My players HATED this.

Something I've Never Seen in an RPG System

Shadow of Yesterday addresses this situation pretty well with their Bringing Down the Pain mechanic

Forked Thread: Do RPGs' Wargaming Aspects Overshadow RPing?

Forked from: Do RPGs' Wargaming Aspects Overshadow RPing? Never forked before..hmmm This is an issue i wanted to create a discussion about. I see this quote a bit. I used to say it myself. in my case i usually meant, we had session where we did not use the system mechanics (which usually...

D&D and psychological development (need help)

Only studies I could find on D&D on PubMed or EMBASE Am J Psychother. 1994 Fall;48(4):624-32.Links Dungeons and Dragons: the use of a fantasy game in the psychotherapeutic treatment of a young adult. Blackmon WD. A schizoidal young man made a methodical attempt at suicide. He...

Forked Thread: "The Death of the Imagination" re: World of Warcraft

The need for some sort of predisposition (or probably several factors that predispose towards a certain behavior) is definitely well known. But the 2 scenarios (violent video games and jodie foster movies) are not similar phenomena. There is definitely a difference between a specific movie or...

Forked Thread: "The Death of the Imagination" re: World of Warcraft

I do want to make it clear that i have no horse in the race about violence, addiction and video games but am trying to decipher the studies to see where the data leads. I personally love violent video games.

That is a very valid point for the epidemiological studies. This is always an issue with those types of studies. For other studies where they look at behaviors and physiological measure following playing the video games (experimental vs epidemiological study) this doesnt really hold. Once again...

Forked Thread: "The Death of the Imagination" re: World of Warcraft

Honestly, that violent video games make people less aggressive is definitely not supported to any real degree in the scientific literature. Every recent review, study and meta-analysis that i know of pretty much states a positive association or possibly no significant association. I would...

Forked Thread: "The Death of the Imagination" re: World of Warcraft

While the study of this phenomena is relatively new, t is pretty well thought by the general scientific community (i work in neuropyschiatry) that online online gaming have an addictive quality. The reward cycle in those games seem to be paradigms for addiction. Now many activities have...

Forked Thread: "The Death of the Imagination" re: World of Warcraft

I haven't read most of the studies in depth but I honestly disagree with this point overall. The ones i have read seem pretty upfront and the conclusions that they make are usually pretty conservative. A lot of the issue is study methodology and subject selection as well as simple statistical...

Forked Thread: "The Death of the Imagination" re: World of Warcraft

This is not actually correct. There have been many studies that have shown that violent video games are associated with increased aggression. Unfortunately the repeatability of the studies has been an issue. Meta-analyses have also come to disparate conclusions due to publication bias. The most...

Honestly, from my vantage point, that site was not very good and not very convincing. Their works cited page is not good they never referenced peer reviewed studies. This is not to say that the authors of the site are incorrect and I think they probably have some correct ideas but that they...

Forked Thread: "The Death of the Imagination" re: World of Warcraft

i got bored and decided to investigate neural activity during video games and frankly and the studies are very sparse (basically close to nonexistent). There were 2 studies by Hiraki (adults and children; similar results) that did show that during video game play activity in the dorsal...

    4e Magic in practice

i totally agree with this. They do. I wouldve been cool to be limited to even 10 or so spells but the spells be really potent, but then again that would not work for some game styles.

Forked Thread: "The Death of the Imagination" re: World of Warcraft

Unfortunately the amount of data is limited though online games are associated with negative effects (health, "real-life" socialization, sleep quality, academic performance, potential increased risk for seizures). But with little data available and lack of strong repeated results make the...

Forked Thread: "The Death of the Imagination" re: World of Warcraft

Being a scientist I would say that this is absolutely not correct. Anecdotal evidence is data. It might not be compelling data, but it is data. The genesis of a lot of studies is anecdotal evidence as initial data (this is the entire point of publishing case studies in medical literature)...

    4e Magic in practice

I actually liked the fewer number of slots. In almost every game i played, casters were always polymorphing and teleporting all over the place and when we became high enough level Wish was used occasionally (though it was costly). Depending on what was going on all sorts of spells were...
