    Theory: Coming to the Table

Dont want to derail the thread though since it is about Pawsplay modeling and not virtues of different rules paradigms

    Theory: Coming to the Table

I was not very clear. I meant i had queries about what was meant with narrative control. I am saying games have rules that whoever (GM or player) wins the challenge (or uses up resources) gets to have narrative control (this is what conflict resolution is pretty much about) about a certain...

    Theory: Coming to the Table

I had queries about this. But many RPGs have rules that allow you to play God. You either can roll or spend resources and you can pretty much say "this happens" DMs also say "this happens" all the time though. An NPC is injured and they determine if the NPC runs away or stays and fights (some...

Did Anyone Else Try Out "A Song of Ice and Fire?"

Shadow of Yesterdays social conflicts work like that. Though there are feats and skills involved and you can do many things to influence the conflict so it can be somewhat narratively tactical.

    Theory: Coming to the Table

Looks interesting and will take a while to delve into it. I do have questions about the above. Games can have mechanical-narrative resolution (TSOY, Sorcerer, BW in certain parts). You make a skill check and can use authorial power (I make my sailing check and I as a player can say "we travel...

    Roleplaying Travel

Which no one but the DM reads actually reads. (I am kind of kidding). I actually think exploration of the world in-game is a much better way of understanding the world than reading any supplement. On the other handi definitely agree that laboriously roleplayed travel, is not an ideal choice of...

    A Campaign Without a Metaplot?

That is a really cool idea. I honestly hadn't of that. One nice thing with TSOY is that while combat can be deadly it is really in the player's hands to choose what stakes to fight for, so I am not really expecting death to occur very readily. In D&D of course resurrection/raise dead being...

Regarding the (supposed) lack of role-playing in 4E

That is an interesting idea. The only issue it might have is that it might not promote the use of bad stats (knowingly stupid decisions or knowingly anticharismatic actions for instance) vs just having bad stats. Hopefully that made sense.

Regarding the (supposed) lack of role-playing in 4E

I have to admit, I generally love the lifepaths though i can find them cumbersome. On the other hand a third of my group doesn't care for them and a third love the idea and are less keen on the practice. I can definitely see the issues with them. I do wish the process was simplified so that...

Regarding the (supposed) lack of role-playing in 4E

You send those players to Rolemaster (which strangely is one of my all time favorite games ;) ) Players also have to look at the issue that choices are not balanced and are not meant to be and that system masters is really important. It is a good example of a game that promotes RPing without...

    "Fun"

I like the challenge rules, i think they were a great addition. I do wish they could have set up some reward system (action points or second wind or extra use of an encounter power) that would tie into the combat powers to reward the players for their choices in a fight. Since it is about a...

Regarding the (supposed) lack of role-playing in 4E

One thing nice about BW (i have never played TRoS) is that it is a good example that you can have a game with very strong gamist elements and very strong story-driving elements and that they can work really well with each other.

    A Campaign Without a Metaplot?

Thanks for the good words ( and from mallus and Oni). It is was one of the few ideas i have that is actually decent (most of my ideas are pretty ridiculous and mostly are utter and abject failures) :D It kind of came up from reading a lot of Conan short stories and rereading the original...

Regarding the (supposed) lack of role-playing in 4E

I think rules that allow players to both influence the story and give the players a vehicle to tell the GM what interests them are good rules. It somewhat goes back to the question of "why reward any result or action with XP" Generally rewards are used to stimulate and enforce certain elements...

Regarding the (supposed) lack of role-playing in 4E

I think what he means (skeptic tell me if I am wrong) but encounters should still use the detailed task resolution that 4E has developed to give players meaningful choices within an encounter. this allows players to enjoy the fiddly bits of combat and lets 4E shine in the area it has chose which...

Hey dont blame GNS...I am a HUGE fan of it and I don't think my posts ever resemble that one.

    A Campaign Without a Metaplot?

We are running a TSOY game with no metaplot. It is a retroactive game sort of. The game started with the characters meeting at a tavern. The characters are at the end of their adventuring career and are telling stories about the "old days." A player then picks a story they want the next...

Regarding the (supposed) lack of role-playing in 4E

WW was trying to initiate a system that really had not been done very well (or at all) up till then, so I do have to give them props for attempting it. I think the issue was that they tried to model the rules using more of a traditional approach to RPGs. I think WW tried to approach the idea of...

Regarding the (supposed) lack of role-playing in 4E

That is kind of one of the reasons why the mechanics of the game didnt necessarily drive the playing style it was trying to create. It would have been better if the vice actually required something bad to happen to the characters to obtain the willpower. We had the same issue with the...

Regarding the (supposed) lack of role-playing in 4E

It is probably something that would be used sparingly but for story concept that is not a bad idea (Danger-Prone Daphnee didnt always cause trouble with her clumsiness but once an episode was enough for the viewers to think of her as clumsy) Importantly it puts the players in control of when...
