    Basic D&D rides again!

It's all a matter of perspective. The Basic, Expert, Companion, Master, & Immortal Rules altogether were fairly complex. By themselves, all the D&D Basic Rules I've seen were pretty light and breezy by today's standards. The '81 Basic/Expert duo was pretty simple but still had tons and tons...

    Basic D&D rides again!

Don't hold back, Ranes. Tell us what you really think. ;) But seriously, some of us didn't come to 3e "through" OD&D/Basic/whatever. You make it sound like we all grew up and now of course play 3e in preference to other versions. Some of us think that OD&D is still just as valid a way to...

How many settings do you own (vs how many you actually use)?

I own Greyhawk and Arcana Unearthed. I run Greyhawk. I haven't had an opportunity to run AU yet. I'll probably buy the new Blackmoor book when it comes out.

    What's the quintessential D&D monster?

    A Toja-what?

    what makes a game "D&D"?

Maybe if you're a greybearded grognard, but the cool kids play the '81 Basic/Expert rules. :)

    What's the quintessential D&D monster?

For iconic monsters in D&D, nothing beats the dragon. As far as original monsters go, I think the beholder wins. Its image has been with us since almost the beginning:

Any BESM D20 fans in the house?

I really like BESM d20, but it strikes me as way out there compared to a lot of d20 products. I don't think I would want to try mixing the D&D classes with the BESM ones.

Warduke is coming to Dungeon #105

No assassin levels for Zarak still? :(

Warduke is coming to Dungeon #105

Hmmm. I thought he was in XL1 Quest for the Heartstone. I remember as a youth that being the only module I ever returned to a store. I couldn't get the clerk to understand that statting Zarak, evil half-orc assassin, as a human thief was wrong, WRONG! But I was insistent enough they took it...

Best RPG books any system, any publisher

A-MEN! For boxed sets I'd add the Call of Cthulhu 3rd edition boxed set and the original Traveller boxed sets. For supplements no one beats Aaron Allston's Strike Force or Ron Edwards' Sorcerer & Sword. Best single book RPG is a toughie, either Adventure! by White Wolf or the D&D Cyclopedia.

    Twenty Five Years

I've considered doing something similar at our next Winter War in Champaign, Illinois. I recently acquired the second half of the tournament module used at Winter War 4, some 26 years ago. (The tournament was published by Judges Guild as the modules Tower of Ulission and Sword of Hope.) EDIT...

    Twenty Five Years

I don't think the red box was out in 1980. The purplish/pinkish/mauve box with the orange book was '81 (editor: Tom Moldvay, cover art: Erol Otus). The red box was '83 (editor: Frank Mentzer, cover artist: Larry Elmore, IIRC).

That balrog-dragon fig of Ral's is the one that always sticks in my mind.

    Pre-3.X D&D Icons

Was he one of the pre-gens from the back of G1-2-3? They all had great Gygaxian names. *digs around* Gleep Wurp the Eyebiter, NG human magic-user 12 Cloyer Bulse the Magsman, N human thief 13 Roaky Swerked, LN human cleric 12 Frush O'Suggill LG human fighter 14 Fonkin Hoddypeak (called it!)...

    Pre-3.X D&D Icons

I finally remembered to dig up my Little Beige Books. Here, friends, is the original D&D iconic, as far as I can tell he is the only named character in the original D&D boxed set. Name: Xylarthen Class: Magic-User Strength: 6 Intelligence: 11 Wisdom:13 Constitution: 12 Dexterity: 9 Charisma: 8...

The Slayer's Guide To Games Masters

Personally I find the author, Johnny Nexus, to be a pretty funny guy, in an unabashedly immature way. Anyone on the fence about getting the Slayer's Guide to Gamemasters should check out his netzine Critical Miss (www.criticalmiss.com).

Impressions of the classes so far

I have no idea. I would guess that since weapons and magic were the only obvious solutions to life's little trials, weapons and magic were what most players employed. Fighting man, cleric, and magic-user. Human, elf, dwarf, and hobbit. These were your only options in the original boxed set.
