    Dungeons & Dragons for Dummies

I plan on buying a copy. I may have been playing D&D for 20+ years and 3.X for almost 5, but I could always use some help.

When Bob wants to play a female PC

    Crap! Thanks for the heads-up!

    Your least favourite setting

All my encounters with the Forgotten Realms have left me cold. At best it seems like an unnecessary competitor for my attentions: anything I would want to do with it I can do with good ol' Greyhawk. At worst it strikes me as a pile of detritus that has accumulated around Ed Greenwood's Mary...

When Bob wants to play a female PC

I think I'm going to play across gender bounds for my next PC. There's some sort of middle ground between lame stereotyping and different-in-name-only PCs. I want to see if I can find that middle ground.

    "Classic" Dragon Articles

My all-time favorite Dragon article has to be Bruce Seligman's "Gandalf Was Only A Fifth Level Magic-User."

What's the most broken PC you've ever seen?

1st edition Barbarians, at least as described in the original Unearthed Arcana, are not allowed to dual-class. At the moment I cannot recall if the original Dragon version contained this same proscription.

d20 superheroes -- why not BESM?

While I love BESM d20 and have had at least one superhero idea for it, M&M has the advantage of support, both from the publisher and a variety of thrid parties. The M&M Superlink section at RPGnow is pretty impressive looking.

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

Clarification: There's plenty of people who play d20 games over on RPG.net. There are people who don't like d20 as well. As a generalist rpg site I think there is room for both side, as long as you keep the most vocal partisans of either side on your ignore list. As a player, I prefer to...

Who publishes Call of Cthulhu (non d20)?

Chaosium produces Call of Cthulhu. BRP is "Basic Role Playing", their game engine. Just as the D20 system is the engine that powers D&D, BRP is the engine that powers CoC and some other Chaosium products. Chaosium is supposed to be release a new product any moment now. IIRC CoC: Dark Age is...

What campaign setting do you use?

I selected Greyhawk and "An TSR setting currently not published" because I have made extensive use of the Known World of Mystara in the past. My next game might be Arcana Unearthed/The Diamond Throne but I didn't select it since I have yet to use it.

How long have we all been playing RPGs?

I still like the one dungeon approach to campaign! I started in the summer of '81 with the boxed set (edited by Moldvay, cover by Otus). I was 9 years old.

What SF RPGs do you play?

Back in the day I tried FASA's Star Trek and Doctor Who games, and maybe a session or two of Gamma World. I'm a big Star Frontiers fan, though I only play the ship-to-ship game these days. I played a couple sessions of MechWarrior too. These days Classic Traveller is my sci-fi game of choice...

Tell me about your low level druid!

My only active PC right now is my 3rd level half-elf druid Endrin Greencloak. I intentionally play down his magical abilities and my only animal companion is a wolf. He's a good little puppy wuppy, he is. :) I've concentrated my feat selection towards masters of two-fisted staff-fu. Rather...

Why do so many people refer to Forgotten Realms as "High Magic?"

I run a earlier incarnation of Greyhawk, escewing much of the later material. Basically I stick to the original boxed set, some of the early modules, and the stuff printed by Gygax in Dragon. The Dragon material I stray from considerably. What other people do with the setting is their...

Why do so many people refer to Forgotten Realms as "High Magic?"

I admit to labelling FR as "high magic", probably unfairly. I think this stems back to my earliest encounters with the Realms, as the back drop for endless "Pages from the Mages" articles. I think I got the impression that FR was chock full of MU's with customized spellbooks. My own Greyhawk...

DnD Adventures in 4th Age Middle Earth... Ideas?

FYI there was a great little thread a few months ago on rpg.net about 4th Age adventures. The discussion was started by players of the Decipher game, but it focused on plot ideas rather than mechanics. I'd search for it and post a link, but rpg.net seems to be down again. :sigh: I'll see if...
