Whats on your D&D/d20 Wishlist (post-X-Mas)

Here's my wish list d20 Mecha Dork d20 Castle and Crusades Castle Zagyg (though I wonder if it will ever actually be published)

Modules with a word substituted with "cheese"

I can't make up my mind which I like better Tomb of Cheese or Cheese of Horrors.

    Unusual gaming terms and phrases

I have been in groups that did the same thing with the PHB, pronouncing it "fub".

Another example of D&D in the mainstream

Take my girlfriend to see RoT? Not a bad idea. Of course, my wife will be pissed. ;) (I can't believe no one had said anything like that yet.)

Rate the stereotype - do you raid dungeons?

Any D&D game I run involves plenty of dungeoneering, it's usually the main thrust of the campaign until we reach the build castles/play politics stage.

    Disappointed with AU

I believe Mr. Cook has all but explicitly stated that his target audience is people already playing D&D, hence the "alternate PHB" tagline. I think its a deucedly smart move, myself. He lets WotC use its corporate muscle to get gamers in the hobby, then uses the OGL to sell them his products...

    Does anyone do non-overpowered anymore?

I usually run low-level games. My only 3e campaign stopped at 6th level. "High-level" at my table means the tail end of the old Expert spectrum: name level to 14th. I haven't tried it yet, but I've been working up some notes for a 3.5e game in which the only "core" classes are Adept, Warrior...

As you got sucked in to D&D, when did you know?

I have never had any realization that I was 'hooked' or whatever. I just started gaming and never looked back.

Where did you first see THAC0?

DL1 came out before the UK series? EDIT: According to Schick (Heroic Worlds) DL1 and UK5 both were published in '84. UK2 was published in '83. Does anybody know if it used THAC0? EDIT2: I first encountered THAC0 as an acronym in UK5. I had already seen 'To-Hit AC 0' in the DMG though.

    Basic D&D rides again!

The marketing advantage of a Basic set seems pretty clear to me. First off, remember that the average non-gamer thinks of a "game" as something that comes complete in a box. (And remember, even after dropping ninety bucks on three big books you still can't play D&D.) Second, just because the...

The book you were all excited to get... and now gathering dust...

Ditto. I thought I had a group lined up for AU, but scheduling turned into a huge mess. Non-D&D-wise I've got Streetfighter, HKAT!, Adventure!, some Exalted, a SAS core book and lots of other Tri-Stat stuff going unused.

Which of WotC's 2004 D&D sourcebooks are you currently planning to buy?

There's no 'none of the above' choice, so I didn't vote.

    Basic D&D rides again!

I was referring to the 1981 D&D Basic Set, edited by Tom Moldvay, cover by Erol Otus. FtM! mentioned the 1983 D&D Basic Set, edited by Frank Mentzer, cover by Larry Elmore. Unfortunately, a large portion of the fanbase (consisting mainly of Mystara-philes, I believe) refers to the 83 Basic...

    Basic D&D rides again!

My original gaming crew was much the same way, pretty much the same age but with the earlier Erol Otus-covered set (the aforementioned Moldvay-edited rules). I've met a lot of other people who've started out with one or another Basic Set.

    Basic D&D rides again!

Maybe I missed an earlier mention of it, but how old are you? I think it's great that you and Ranes don't need a Basic Set. I fail to see why that means its a bad idea though. Obviously Basic Sets have gotten people into the hobby. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks there are still kids...

    Basic D&D rides again!

Let's assume for a moment that you are correct in your assessment. Do you think the present PHB does an ideal or even good job of explaining that to a player in a vacuum? I think a better job could be done. Do you think the present DMG does a good job of conveying these facts to a novice DM...

Could more "option" books be a "bad" thing?

You pretty much just described my group's first encounter with the original Unearthed Arcana. There it was, all chock full of new toys ready to run roughshod over our current campaign. We were too young and stupid to realize you have to be careful when implementing new stuff.

    Basic D&D rides again!

I believe that many people would agree with me when I state that TSR occassionally made an unwise decision. In my opinion ending the D&D product line was one of them. I've met lots and lots and LOTS of players who got their start in gaming on the various Basic editions.
