Going to church? Don't forget your sawed-off shotgun!

While not common, I've actually been to church when I knew I wasn't the only one with a loaded weapon there - and no one was law enforcement! Time and place really matter.

Missoula Mad Dies Breaking into Hobby Store

The store carried gaming stuff for twenty years but sold most of it off a few years back. Now all they have gaming wise is a few sporadic GW items and some board games.

How often do NPCs/monsters flee in your group?

While fleeing when obviously outmatched or the battle is turning sour is common IMC, I have found that the chances of NPCs surviving are low primarily due to spell casting PCs. As to relentless pursuit, once a group has a reputation for it they often targets for some nasty ambushes.

    How to recruit quality GMs?

Years back our local con used to host a game for the primary GMs run by the gaming guest. Tracy Hickman and Zeb Cook were memorable standouts and it was a cheap perk that really meant something for the GMs.

OK Librarians and English Wonks, I need help!

When I was a grad student I found that professor right was often different than real world right. If in doubt check with your department secretary for the official department rules. Of course you could face reality and just prepare slightly modified papers for each professor.

How to: Cthulhu in the 20's.

Most libraries also have magazines and local newspapers archived. Spend an afternoon just browsing and get the feel for the period. Be sure to read the small articles as well as the big ones.

Is the Necrotic line of spells broken?

Now that I think about it, at one point I considered applying created cysts against a caster's number of undead controlled as most Necrotic casters are also going to be dabbling in post mortem animations. Once the number was exceeded the earliest cysts would quickly whither away. I ended up...

Is the Necrotic line of spells broken?

All I can say is the two times my NPC's used them my players nearly revolted, even with the need to infect the target first.

Do you use the allip as-is?

I allow the drain to become damage only when the Allip dies. It makes for a good plot device.

Compelling the PC's to an unknown destination... how?

All the players need to know up front is that the focus of the campaign will be subterranean. Beyond that just let them discover underground peasants wearing gold in abundance and have some NPC make the comment about gold (mithril if necessary) being worth next to nothing to these people...

    Cityscape ToC

Rare is the fantasy city map that illustrates this. Most look just like modern suburbs except that there is an immense city wall that stretches for miles around the city with no care to the cost of building it, maintaining it, or of manning it.

The dumbest place you have seen a trap.

Stranded in a hostile castle we were short of food and searching through the pantry. The flour bin had a puzzle key lock that dumped anyone trying the wrong combination into the Astral Plane. The barrel of herring contained a mimic, the massive fireplace had a port-a-cullis that trapped the...

WotC Game Day - Anyone play?

My 8 yr old and I had a blast. The key thing was to relax and not sweat some of the details as uprepared GMs fumbled through and it was good to play instead of DMing.

    Frame Story

I've done this a couple of ways. The first is to run a one shot featuring a current PC at a prior point in time while the other players run NPCs. The purpose is to spotlight something or someone in the character's past. This works alot better than the player simply saying, "Oh, that's my arch...

Anything odd happen to you on Halloween?

On Halloween no, but this morning while I waited with my son for his school bus a young man in his twenties came by wearing nothing but a pair of briefs and carrying the gauze remnants of a mummy costume along with a mask. The poor guy was shivering like crazy as it was only 12 above zero (F).

What real world Holidays have made it into you game?

I've used Halloween of course, but have also incorporated Mardi Gras several times and a few years ago ran an AlQadim adventure centered around Ramadan. In general I use the real world holidays when I want the players to have an intimate understanding of events relevant to the adventure...

Ninja and Pirates get their due... But what of Cowboys?

Given how many loner types in OD&D and 1st Ed were just wanna be Clint Eastwoods I'd say the "cowboy" persona is at the core of most characters already.

Is a game store viable business?

We all dream of opening a game store and sharing our love of the hobby with others, but given the failure rate of new businesses, and yes buying one is in that same category, I gotta say you need to first put your efforts into the one you have unless you have no dependants/investors and don't...
