    Anyone remember Melee?

I once asked Steve Jackson to sign my copies of AM,AW, and ITL - I was suprised at the hostility of his reaction. Later he appologised and said that the subject was "touchier than a bad divorce."

How do you describe your cities or towns?

If the PCs are just traveling through I try to pick out one or two features - persons, culture, architecture, landmarks, etc.- that make the city distinctive and highlight them during a brief narrative. My goal is to be able to say "The city where ..." and have the players be able to recognise...

    Mounted combat: Do you bother?

Ask your DM as it can vary a lot. Right now I am running a group with three players specializing in mounted combat, and it has been great. Centaurs have been the chief opponents and we often use a 20' or 50' per square scale on the battlemat. Ranged weapons, spectacular charges, a lot has...

    Has D&D become too...D&Dish?

I too am an old curmudgeon and gotta agree with you. But I have also noticed a profound difference in the adherence to the style dogma I encounter online versus the real world .

    RPG-ish Boardgames

Arkham Horror is close and a good game to boot. Then there's always Diplomacy, the original LARP.

Is mapping a lost art with adventurers?

On those rare occasions when I'm a player I keep a simple flow chart style map with notes and a few rooms copied directly from the battle map.

How did you pick a wireless plan?

I use my mainly for work and routinely average over 3,000 minutes a month. It was amazing how many places simply told me they had no plans to handle that. In the end a local provider put together a custom plan that I've been tickled with. It was there flexibility that won me over.

How do I defend against the neighbors?

As one of those evil landlord types who is paid to evaluate investments like the houses around you, there are a couple of long term solutions as well; you can sue the landlords for maintaining a public disturbance or the like. Laws very by state but nearly every state has them and landlords pay...

What are the biggest real-life hinderances to your gaming?

For me its my son. Right now gaming is time we're not spending with him, so my wife and I consciously limit ourselves to one game a week.

Clerics who would get spells from worshippers rather than deities

For sometime IMC I've been doing something similar - the main church has no god and its clerics derive their power from the faithful. As a rule of thumb, it takes 20 or so parishioners per the square of the cleric's level to provide the necessary support which is passed on via daily ritual like...

Tactical arguments and how to avoid them

As has been said there isn't enough time during combat for PCs to do more than yell "Get the big guy!" and the DM should be enforcing it. Out of combat, much time can be spent by players trying to sway you the person, not your character, to agree with them. If this is uncomfortable or time...

Help me develop this campaign element

The houseless that takes the Queen's body could be the spirit of a past noble, perhaps even tyrant, that has grudges to feed. Imagine even a past monarch secretly killed by an alliance the various factions returning.

Celto-Vikings: lets create the ideal RPG barbarian culture

One thing I did IMC was to replace direct purchase with gifting only - even barter was rare. Mechanically I did this by using the D20 wealth system. You're likelyhood of getting what you needed was governed only by your reputation for generosity. It drove the players nuts as they gave away their...

    creating a great map handout

This summer i picked up some tanned rabbit hides for a few bucks each. They still have some fur on them and will be used for the maps of the "Barbarian lands". Scrap leather can also be gotten inexpensively if you're patient and makes for a great map.
