RPG Evolution: Why the New D&D Board Game is a Big Deal

Do you know what replaced comics in convenient stores? L'eggs nylons. They had the exact same footprint and tons more sales. Isn't that wild? Comics is it's own issue (pun intended). Publishers created the monopoly that is DIamond Comics because Marvel tried and failed to become its own...

RPG Evolution: Why the New D&D Board Game is a Big Deal

That is false in my two stores, all of our product lines matter. M:tG does have nice weekly sales through casual players, singles, and tournaments. However, Comics are a nice steady, and weekly source of income. D&D, dice, and miniatures are also a nice steady stream, the key is knowing your...

RPG Evolution: Why the New D&D Board Game is a Big Deal

First, rereading my post came off more chiding than I meant, so I apologize for that. Its tough because we do get kids coming in here and while you can find the Starter set, Essentials kit, and dice in some big box stores you are going to need an online store a local game store for the rest...

RPG Evolution: Why the New D&D Board Game is a Big Deal

I understand your point but hobby stores have kept the game alive for decades, we weren't that big of weakness. 3.x was pretty successful without the mass market.

An Official Hellboy RPG Is Coming!

True, but starting at level 3 could offset some of that. I never thought GURPS was a good fit for Hellboy and I'm a bit dubious about 5E, but it would be dumb not to use the biggest and first RPG that is currently pretty chic. I look forward to this either way.

2020's Diana Jones Award Goes to Black Excellence in Gaming

I think it depends on the year and I'm okay with that. This year has been so tough that sharing this award with a number of talented people simply spreads a little extra light into the darkness.

2020's Diana Jones Award Goes to Black Excellence in Gaming

Mike Pondsmith is, IMO, on the same level with Greg Stafford, Dave Arneson, and Gary Gygax. The man is brilliant. His son Cody and Jerry Grayson are amazing designers as well. Glad to see this.

Strange Aliens and Fantastic Planets Abound in M-SPACE and the M-S Companion

Action Points (which controls the action economy) and Hit Locations are the two biggest changes. Beyond that skill point allocation has a few extra steps in Mythras compared to CoC 7E. However M-Space provides options for these to simplify it. Also, the Mythras Companion, I believe, has rules...

'Tales from Xadia' Dragon Prince RPG Announced

Time will tell, but I'm not a fan of Marvel Heroic or Smallville so I'll be looking for another system to run it and 5E is pretty popular around my hometown.

D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd 'Revamped' Boxed Collector's Edition

I don't think this is the last edition of D&D but I also don't think we will see 6E for a few more years. However, products like this worry me about how well the current team is maintaining the line.

D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd 'Revamped' Boxed Collector's Edition

I already own the hardcover, GF9 DM screen, and Tarokka Deck and they set me back $75. I get that they had to reprint Curse of Strahd anyway, but why so expensive? I'd much rather had a new cover by Hydro74 and a reprint like what they did for Tyranny of Dragons. If I'm going to get a box set...

Jiangshi: Blood in the Banquet Hall -- An Interview with the Creators

I respect that, however I'm not a big fan of RPGs that work like a board game by codifiying what the player and GM can do. I get that many people like that when you look at the success of Powered by the Apocalypse Games, its just not my cup of tea. I have always roleplayed to escape and...

Jiangshi: Blood in the Banquet Hall -- An Interview with the Creators

I read about this on their KS. Respectfully, I work at a family business and while it is rewarding I want to escape from it in my RPGs. Additionally, I'm a bit perplexed about dealing with racism in an RPG. Again, I find that I play to escape the cruelties of an unjust and racist system. Just...

RPG Evolution: Retiring as a Game Designer

I expected a very different article (someone explaining why they were retiring now) and this was a great idea and a great article. Thank you.

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: 16 New Feats

I don't understand the need for the multi-class type Feats unless you don't allow multi-classing. It all feels like rules bloat to me. Depending on how this and the alternate abilities UA several months ago turn out, this might the first 5E book I don't use at my table.

I've never heard of his game until now. I wish him well.

WotC Older D&D Books on DMs Guild Now Have A Disclaimer

I agree and think this is the best course. I don't recall OA using the yellow peril trope, is it just because the authors weren't of Asian descent?

D&D, Conan, and He-Man: Toys That Never Were

I think the fact that it was so weird is what me and my friends love it. So many people that make things for kids assume they are dumb. Look at how many kids were playing D&D even though its writing wasn't always very accessible.

D&D, Conan, and He-Man: Toys That Never Were

Thanks for covering this Michael. I knew about the Conan connection but not about Larry or D&D.
