    Removing homogenity from 4e

Hate to burst your bubble, but these probably aren't terribly good examples of things that 4e does "better"... Wizards in 4e can "out-rogue" the rogue - they still get things like expeditious retreat, jump, fly, invisibility, etc which are usually better than the equivalent rogue utility powers...

    Removing homogenity from 4e

I think more what I was saying is that if the same DM picked up the core books and played by the letter of the rules outlined in them, the 3.x experience will feel like the players have more options and the tactics will be a lot more free form than the 4e game, at least in my experience with the...

    Removing homogenity from 4e

Or, more to the point, not different enough. :)

    Removing homogenity from 4e

It's getting a bit off topic, but seeing as you asked: With earlier editions, your characters actions were a blank slate. You could pretty much suggest any action you wanted, and the DM would either have rules to adjudicate it or be able to come up with something to handle it. Wrestle (grab)...

    Removing homogenity from 4e

As someone who has played/run a lot of 4e (more than once a week, on average, since it was released last year), across all 3 tiers of play, I don't see how anyone can honestly claim 4e isn't homogenous. I see 3 main areas where this is clearly demonstrated: 1) character creation/advancement, as...

Which settings (any game, any edition) have the best maps?

Seconded on both counts. I'd also like to echo that the 4e Eberron maps are gorgeous, and add Dark Heresy (particularly the "old seafarer style" system map).

    Removing homogenity from 4e

This reminds me of one of my favourite quotes: "When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail". That and an ex-girlfriend who exemplified that quote by trying to hammer in the screws that held her TV cabinet together. Man that thing had a vicious lean on it. :)

non switchers: what can wotc do to win you back?

This is gonna sound a bit weird, but my answer is: Get rid of D&D Insider (or at least the compendium and character builder). It's not that I don't like it, in fact it's the opposite. It's so good and useful that I just don't need the books anymore. Not that I've bought every 4e book...

WotC forums down for a week or two?

Far be it for me to steal their thunder, but it seems to be back up again. :)

What do we know about 'Revenge of the Giants'?

I'm pretty much in the same boat. The introduction hasn't impressed me at all, and I don't really have a burning desire for a paragon level 4e adventure (or a WotC adventure for that matter - the quality of their 4e adventures has really disappointed). Still, I said the same thing about Red...

What do we know about 'Revenge of the Giants'?

I'd expect one to be included in a similar way to the FR and Eberron CG books - i.e.: perforated at the back.

What do we know about 'Revenge of the Giants'?

Definitely agree here. I don't think that failing to emulate the feel will mean it's a failure. But I also definitely didn't get that AtG feel from it. And reading the introduction definitely didn't inspire me personally to want to play or run it. :(

Which RPGs are you currently playing?

Playing in a Pathfinder "conversion" of the Legacy of Fire AP from Paizo (weekly) and a 4e conversion of the classic Dragonlance modules (weekly). Also running the Star Wars Saga Dawn of Defiance adventures (fortnightly). Or at least something closely resembling them... :)

What do we know about 'Revenge of the Giants'?

I'm with TerraDave on this one. On my initial read through of the introduction, I just wasn't getting the "Against the Giants" vibe at all... still, as people have pointed out, the finished product may have captured the feel a lot better than that introduction.

Was D&D the game you introduced role playing with?

I think the first time I ever played a RPG was D&D. A cousin of a friend brought it over one day and we all tried to play. I wasn't a big fantasy fan in those days and, other than the idea of a portable hole, the game didn't grab me. Then I got into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comics. In the...

    DMG2 Excerpt: Companion Characters

I can see a place for them, although I agree with those who have pointed out that the existing NPC/monster rules already handle this stuff, so I'm curious to see how these rules are different. More concerning to me is the glaring rules error. The first bullet point talks about adjusting the...

    My wishlist to improve DDI

This already exists, to a degree. While it isn't a published standard, there are a fair bit of AJAX XML & XHTML snippets that are used by the compendium. I wasn't really happy with the compendium UI, so I created a desktop application that I actually use for accessing the compendium. It uses the...

What is your favorite edition of D&D and why?

You know, in the last week or two I think I've changed my mind a fair bit on this! As a DM I really like the ease of prep for 4e, although tracking conditions/marks/etc actually seems to make running 4e a lot more fiddly for me. Unfortunately, I really don't like a lot of the 4e fluff and I've...

WotC forums down for a week or two?

This is exactly the sort of change I expect, and this is something that should result in a very short downtime. Certainly one measured in hours (at the most) rather than days. And even that "outage" should be in the form of a read-only period not a complete outage. For the record, I think the...
