Buck Rogers XXVc wasn't that bad a game.

Spoken like a true person who has never read the game, let alone played it. I say bollocks. As someone who played 2e (mainly because I loved the settings) but wasn't too fond of the rules, I enjoyed XXVc a lot. Having said that, the rules were essentially still 2e. From memory there was AC, HP...

Playing a 4e/PHBII Shaman? Let's hear about it

Wow, it's been a few editions since I've heard that! ;) Seriously though, I'm also one of those left a bit cold by the shaman. It's good to read this input - I think I'm warming to it (if ever so slightly...)

Buck Rogers XXVc wasn't that bad a game.

I've been thinking the same thing. I *loved* this game at the time (admittedly I was about 15 years old, but it was totally sweet). The map of the solar system with the little plastic ruler to measure travel times... I think it even had movable planet counters so the travel times always varied...

    Playtest: Martial Power 2

And, my reply to that would be that's fine, if you can get away with it. Not everyone has the luxury of just ignoring rules they don't like (RPGA gamers, users of the Character Builder, etc).

Is Paizo's Pathfinder really compatible with 3.5?

Err... you mean subtract 3 and rename to CMB, right? One of the things PF did was change the size modifiers to grapple from +4/8/16/etc to +1/2/4/etc. Small change, but one that makes a big difference. And one I don't personally like because it does hurt backwards compatibility a bit. I've...

    Playtest: Martial Power 2

That would be very silly, because then they'd just be trading a group of proven customers (those who like the simplicity and balance of the 4e ruleset) for a group of potential customers (those who like the customisability and simulation of 3e). <devils advocate> Unless of course they have...

Pathfinder 1E Free RPG Day Swag - Eberron, Pathfinder Bestiary, Geist RPG

Shame we won't be getting any of this down in our little corner of the world. :( I'd really like to get a copy of the Rogue Trader preview adventure from FFG...

Melee Training - Good or Bad?

Meh. This guy is going to be pumping Str for all his other attacks anyway, so it's only ever going to be a +1 difference. Taking Expertise (+1 to hit with all attacks) is likely to be much more valuable to this guy than +1 to hit and + 1 damage with basic attacks only. Especially past 15th...

Melee Training - Good or Bad?

While I don't have a problem with this feat (DracoSuave did a very good job of outlining why - essentially for most classes Expertise is much better), the above isn't the reason why. Because if you were going to take the feat, I don't see why you would ever take it for an ability score that...

High Crit Property with Implement Attacks

Right, I see it now... was looking at the Swordmage Powers section, which also discusses implements. Very interesting. I wonder how this works with versatile? If they grasp their weapon in 2 hands to use a power (a free action) they get +1 damage? They can then just switch back to holding it in...

High Crit Property with Implement Attacks

Do you have a source for that? I've checked the Wizard of the Spiral Tower PP, the Swordmage class and the PHB FAQ (with the Weapon Focus ruling), and I can't find any reference to this. Do you perhaps mean this item in the FAQ? Seems pretty clear to me that question is referring specifically...

High Crit Property with Implement Attacks

Yeah, as I pointed out, the Weapon Focus ruling does muddy the waters because it implies that anything not explicitly ruled out (i.e.: proficiency bonus) does apply. However, I also think either High Crit applies fully, or not at all - there isn't any precident for only part of a rule (i.e...

High Crit Property with Implement Attacks

Interesting question. Firstly, I think it's clearly the developers intent that it doesn't, even if it isn't explicitly stated. Secondly, the exact wording is: I bolded the bits I think are relevant - namely that the critical has to be scored with the weapon. The ability to use a weapon as an...

    things i like/dislike about PHB2 - a sort of review

I just really, really wish they'd thought a bit more about it before releasing this feat. Houseruling it is all very well and good, but doesn't help those of us playing in RPGA games or wanting to use the character builder... :( Hopefully WotC sees the light and erratas the feat itself, but I'm...

    Overpowered race?

Except that the choice isn't just between Expertise (bonus feat) and Elven Accuracy. It's between human and elf, and involves other benefits as well. Not least of which is that fact that if the elf is any class that doesn't have Dex or Wis as a primary ability score, the difference between the...

    Overpowered race?

No disagreement there chief, though you are comparing Expertise to what is widely considered one of the best racial abilities in the game... and even then admitting it is comparable...

    things i like/dislike about PHB2 - a sort of review

Except that there is no rule which states what you claim in the bits I bolded above... see PHB p275.

    Overpowered race?

Sure, I understand that argument. The trouble with it is that at first level, it's a clear advantage. And it doesn't stop there. Lets say there are 3 really good feats in the game, which in combination with the other human racial bonuses are better than any other race's bonuses. One could...

    Overpowered race?

Right, but the designers of the game should understand racial abilities (especially those of probably the most well known and popular of races), and the implications of introducing new rules elements that interact with those abilities. The reality is (regardless of intentions) that introducing a...

    things i like/dislike about PHB2 - a sort of review

While Expertise is better than Nimble Blade in every way, and does completely overshadow it, it doesn't obselete it because they can stack. Surprisingly though, Nimble Blade isn't a feat bonus, so would have stacked with Expertise if it had been a feat bonus...
