    D&D 4E 4e: Death of the Bildungsroman

I'm not sure that I 100% agree. I mean I've read plenty of books where the main character was some blacksmiths apprentice in the beginning. But yet frequently in the begining they will still somehow manage to defeat two people at once or accomplish something reasonably impressive. It may be...

So when non minion orcs come crawling out of a fireball it's realistic, but when minion orcs come crawling out of one it's unrealistic. Right........ Or perhaps your saying that everyone should die from a fireball regardless of their level or hit points. The spell text could just say "kills...

Keep on the Shadowfell character sheet scans

Based on the original pre-gen characters it looks like you only get 1 skill. I think the multi-class feats are actually supposed to be more powerful then regular ones. This is balanced by the fact that you can only ever choose one multiclass.....so you might want to do it for a better reason...

Keep on the Shadowfell character sheet scans

Well burning hands does an average of 11 damage at lvl 1 to multiple targets. That's about a third of their hit points.....nothing to sneeze at. Assuming their opponents make all their saves and the wizard picks up a +1 wand, the lvl 3 power does an average of 14.5 damage to a fairly large area...

    A Doubters Review

I started playing basic D&D in 3rd grade after teaching myself the rules from scratch. I thought every dungeon had to be exactly like the starting dungeon in the book, and that hit dice was maximum number of hit points (so 8 HD meant 1-8 hit points).

    pawsplay's dealbreaker list

Well I can understand the missing classes even if it annoys me. It's not like 3e anymore where non spellcasting classes only need 2-3 pages, and spellcasting classes share powers with each other. Classes are far more complicated now and it's understandable that they not try to balance/present...

    pawsplay's dealbreaker list

Believe it or not, minions are not intended to be used for every single encounter in the game. There are stats for regular orcs and regular dwarves too that you are free to use. Complaining that minions are useless because you can come up with an encounter idea they are inapropriate for is...

    Orcs preview

What is the paradox exactly? 3e had no concept of minions so if you wanted mookss you had to use underleveled opponents who couldn't hurt their enemy. You can still do that in 4e if you really want to for example throwing outclassed lvl 3 orcs raiders against the lvl 10 party rather then lvl 9...

The miss thing doesn't partcularly bother me. Normal monsters can shrug off multiple hits and glancing blows before they are killed. Minions can shrug off multiple glancing blows, but one single direct hit kills them. If you'd prefer you can imagine an orc warrior as an orc with 70 hit points...

The "first" soul gem? How many soul gems do you expect to face? Given the lore this is based on I'm not even sure there IS more then 1 in existance. But if you were for some reason playing in a all soul gem all the time campaign then yeah...it's not unreasonable to say the players would start...

    Traps preview

Well I believe in the actual ghost tower there was nowhere to stand in the room with the gem that was safe. It was in a small room on top a staircase or something. Either way if the goal is to retrieve the gem, then blowing it up from range would probably not be the optimal strategy....

    Traps preview

The soul gem appears to be a reference to the ghost tower of inverness or however that was spelled. I believe it's a classic 1e adventure that featured a soul gem firing blasts around the room in a similar pattern to what was described. I believe the point was to get the soul gem (but could be...

    Excerpt: Weapons (MERGE)

I believe the fighting style you mention involves the use of a katana and wakazashi....or in very broad english terms a long sword and a short sword. Note that even legendary samurai didn't try to fight with 2 long swords at once. Keep in mind I didn't say there were no historical fighting...

    Excerpt: Weapons (MERGE)

Well it is worth noting that throughout history I don't believe there has ever been a fighting style in the real world that used two equal sized long blades. One might reasonably assume that there is a very good reason for this.

    Excerpt: Weapons (MERGE)

A high crit weapon that does d8 damage will do an average of 4.5 extra damage on a crit. That means every attack will do 4.5/20 extra damage or in this cases .22 extra damage on heroic or .66 at epic. That's rather underwhelming. As for swingy, at epic level your crit will hit for an average of...

D&D 4E Will the 4E classes be deliberately unbalanced to get players to read?

The idea comes from magic, where it was used to good effect. Weither it should be part of D&D is another matter entirely (I would say no).

    Some crunch from Rich Baker

I suppose everyone's experience on this will be different, but I find undead to be one of the most popular monsters used in adventures. So this does tend to be a pretty powerful ability. From a fluff perspective, it does seem that every cleric has the ability to manipulate radiant energy, and...

Intimidate, or "whoops I wasted my skill points"

In 3.5 I think the primary use of intimidate was that it was the only social skill available to classes like fighters and barbarians. As a result many chose to take it.

Intimidate, or "whoops I wasted my skill points"

I'm actually a little surprised it didn't get rolled up into another skill somewhere. But I guess that's true of all the social skills. With that being said, with NPCs in 4e having the potential to be immune or highly resistant to certain social skills, having intimidate might be a good way to...
