Nentir Vale Coming to Dungeons and Dragons

It wasn't so much about how the entire world was out to kill you, but that going outside the cities and towns was dangerous. Bandits, wild animals, etc. I loved the Raven Queen - a former mortal that overthrew the previous (evil) god of death and took over his mantle without being evil or...

Nentir Vale Coming to Dungeons and Dragons

I can't wait for this game. I've always loved the Nentir Vale and I really like Mearls' changing of the origin of deities.

D&D 5E (2014) What Does the Game Need Now?

Oh, man. I want more ways to spend gold. Give me a book about domain play - raising armies, creating new creatures, building a stronghold, establishing a religious order, carving out a niche for a guild, turning wilderness into civilized, workable land, creating a druid circle/grove. A psion...

Your Favorite Character... That You Barely/Never Got to Play

For one glorious session, I played a warforged bard whose guitar doubled as a great axe. He would enter the battle playing Judas Priest or Iron Maiden. I plan for him to make a comeback as an NPC sometime soon.

Does an undead raised with Animate Dead retain any knowledge it had in life?

I would say no. Skeletons and zombies aren't smart enough. A ghoul might remember its past, but in vague terms, but skeletons and zombies not so much.

Well hello, next week's pay day purchase.

    D&D 5E (2014) A non-canon timeline of Chult for ToA DMs

I'm definitely using this as a reference for my own Eberron ToA game.

What is the default setting of 5e?

In theory, there isn't one. In practice, it's the Realms. Most official products are Realms-focused. Tales from the Yawning Portal - the Yawning Portal is set in the Realms. Tomb of Annihilation - set in Chult, in the Realms. All the adventures other than Curse of Strahd are Forgotten Realms...

    A gelatinous Cube and a 10-feet corridor ...

Honestly, either one of these would be the direction I went. If you want a penalty for being in the same space, disadvantage on attacks until one of the two moves, and whichever one of them goes first must move or otherwise be out of that space by the end of their turn.

    Official 5e Classes?

No, not really. Not when I hear so much complaining about broken stuff from WotC. And I know of at least one site, Middle Finger of Vecna, that playtests their stuff extensively, takes fan submissions, and is totally open to revising stuff that their fans point out to them. Seriously, with so...

    Official 5e Classes?

You have two of them: Mystic and Artificer. Published by WotC straight to the internet. And you have dozens on the DM's Guild. I don't see why WotC-official material has to be any better than unofficial. Especially with how much complaining goes on about overpowered feats and broken combos.

    Official 5e Classes?

That's the beautiful part about 5E. Between the DM's Guild and third-party releases, there's plenty of quality classes to be had. I much prefer 5E's slow release schedule over the "a book or two, twelve thousand spells, and maybe a new class or two" every month. You can do a lot with...

"Theater of the Mind" or Map and Minis?

I mostly use Roll20's grid map, but I figured out how to disable it the other day, so that might start going away. So it won't be precisely theater of the mind, as it's still map-based, but closer than a rigid grid.

    Wizard's Spell Book Allocation

I'd keep in mind that copying spells from another wizard's spellbook into your own costs time and money. I'd say that, even if you have another wizard's spellbook, you still have to copy it into your own as every wizard notates their spells in their own unique way. That way handing out a...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Primer on Creating Organizations

I'm totally borrowing this for my Spelljammer game. Possibly also the D&D adventuring high school game.

Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?

That's one reason I do allow UA stuff. If we don't play with the stuff that needs tweaking, it makes it that much harder for WotC to know what needs tweaked and what's good.

Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?

Very occasionally, I'll put a limit on something for thematic reasons. Overall, I'm willing to allow pretty much everything WotC has put out, including UA stuff. A good chunk of the fun in this game, for me, is tweaking all the dials to get things running well to keep things fun for everyone...

    Spell Stained Environment

If it was my game, I would roll every single time a spell is cast. As soon as the spellcaster's turn is over, that's when I'd roll. Alternately, you could do it like a Lair Action. On initiative count X, roll the dice. On a result of Y or lower, this effect happens. Maybe have several effects...

    Spell Stained Environment

If you want to have it both random and tied to magic being cast, here's a thought. Every time a leveled spell is cast (unless you want it to possibly activate from cantrips, too), roll a d10. On a 3 or lower, the magic effect activates. Or a 5 or lower, or on an even or odd roll. Or a 1-in-6...

Looking for GMs to Playtest Biopunk / Cyberpunk Game

I can't promise I'd be able to run it immediately, but this sounds like a really interesting play on cyberpunk.
