    5e damaging magic items.

That's a good idea. I hadn't even thought of adding concentration for magic items.

    Simplifying NPC Spellcasters

Fair enough. I do like the idea of an NPC caster throwing out some spell that leaves my players going, "uh, what? That's not on my spell list!" I also just really like a recharge mechanic, especially for innate casters. Something like an explicit NPC wizard, yeah, a condensed spell list is...

    Simplifying NPC Spellcasters

That's the easiest way to do it, yeah. For most cantrips, I just put it down as an attack, same way I would on my own character sheet. Sometimes, though, I really like having crazy 'spells' that are different enough so that the players don't go "oh, it's just a fireball. 8d6 damage, we can...

An unused concept for the Modron Primus for 5e

Honestly, I couldn't be happier with Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes. It's exactly what I wanted. Lots of cool fiend lore, plus all the tiefling 'subraces.' The elves got a good chunk, with eladrin and shadar-kai making an appearance. The dwarves and duergar got explored, and I actually am really...

    5e damaging magic items.

I'd go one of two ways on this, heavily leaning toward the first way. 1. Talk to your player outside the game. Explain, without being accusatory or anything like that, that the item is causing some problems and suggest a nerf. For this specific example, maybe the flying object has a time limit...

    Simplifying NPC Spellcasters

That rewritten bestiary is pretty much exactly what I was looking for. That's the kind of stuff that makes DMing 5E, an already fairly easy game for a DM, even simpler.

    Kobold Press's Margreve Kickstarter

It's a really strange move, considering their Warlock Patreon is almost entirely PDFs. If not for a PDF option, I wouldn't have backed the Midgard Kickstarter a while back. I get why they want to try a hardback only option, to emulate WotC. That said... I really wish WotC did official PDFs...

    Simplifying NPC Spellcasters

One of my main problems with 5E is the way it treats NPC or monster spellcasters, in that it treats them exactly like PC spellcasters. Managing spell lists and spell slots is fine for PCs, since they only have one character to manage. But a DM might be running, for example, one main spellcaster...

How Do You Enjoy D&D Away From the Table

Game prep, mostly. Writing up magic items. Making maps for my game. Getting everything set up in Roll20 - maps, character sheets, tokens, etc. World building and creating NPCs. Making custom stuff - spells, races/subraces, class options, monsters. Reading through the books, particularly...

Proof that PHB +1 is a completely unneeded rule

It just lowers the chances, plus it's easier to remember which books you'll need at the table. "Okay, three of my players have Xanathar's subclasses, and my other regular player took something from SCAG. Cool, I can leave Mordenkainen's and Volo's at home instead of stuffing those in my game...

Proof that PHB +1 is a completely unneeded rule

With a very simple solution: don't play Adventurer's League games if it's that big a deal. Start up a non-AL game.

    Drinking Problem

My current games are on Roll20, so I don't have to deal with smokers, fortunately. Usually for a game, I'll have a beer. We usually break after the first two hours, so I'll finish the beer early and switch to water afterward. The beer is more because I enjoy a lot of craft beers rather than a...

    Eldritch Evocations

Maybe as the warlock proves themself worthy, the patron requires a more specific pact in return for granting the warlock more power. Thus, at 3rd level you get a pact boon and access to more invocations.

Proof that PHB +1 is a completely unneeded rule

I don't play Adventurer's League, but the PHB +1 rule does make it a bit easier on DMs that may not have all the books. Or that don't want to flip through three different books trying to find something on a character sheet that the player can't remember what it does or where they found it. I...

Spelljammer A Spelljammer Retrospective (and Why It Makes Sense for 5E)

I'm currently starting up a Roll20 game of Spelljammer in 5E. Actually, we've played one session, but we're running through The Sunless Citadel first, so I have time to work on Spelljammer specific mechanics, but here's what I'm doing. Note: I'm running a self-contained solar system. Several...

D&D 5E (2014) What DM flaw has caused you to actually leave a game?

Strictly enforcing alignment. I had a DM who constantly harped on alignment. "Your character is Chaotic Good, do you think they would really do that?" "Oh, you want to help that person? Doesn't sound like the action of a True Neutral character to me." "No, you can't do something like that...

Wizards wanted to fire us, so can we fire them for setting laziness

While I've never set a game in the Forgotten Realms, I totally get why it's a good base setting. It's flavorful enough to be able to say, "oh yeah, Waterdeep and Baldur's Gate, those are in the Realms," but generic enough to not jar new players' expectations. All of the Forgotten Realms' basic...

Would you play a D&D campaign without leveling?

For something as long as Storm King's Thunder, no. Going that long without leveling would be incredibly boring, even if it was in my sweet spot in the low teens. Now, if it was a 20th level campaign, with advancement coming through boons, I'd consider it. Doubly so if the campaign pitch was...

Burning Questions: What's the Worst Thing a DM Can Do?

The first thing I thought of was taking control of players' characters. For example, if I declared an action for my character and a DM said "nope, your character does X instead." Unless there was a magical compulsion, for which I should definitely be made aware of ahead of time, this is a huge...

How old were you when your first GMed an RPG?

I was 12 and ran the adventure out of the D&D 3.0 Adventure Box, or whatever the starter set was called back in 3.0. My Dad had run the adventure for me a few days before and I immediately wanted to teach the game to my friends. Sixteen years later and I'm still running games far more than I play.
