D&D 5E (2014) D&D Lingua Franca, or 5e really, REALLY needs to create it's own new "space"

Er... How so? How is one measurement any better than another when it comes to learning the game? I mean... I could easily argue that cubic feet is a terrible measurement. It doesn't have a clear meaning because of the infinite vagueness of dimensions and space in a tabletop RPG. How is even the...

What kinds of New Settings do you want?

Not really, though the difference would be pretty hard for me to explain, I think. Especially since I'm only familiar with the coarse details of Warhammer and warhammer 40k. The direct inspiration I'm using can also be pretty obscure. I guess the simplest way to put it is that the aesthetics and...

What kinds of New Settings do you want?

I think I'd like to see something in the total opposite direction of gritty, low-magic, and "realistic". I'd like to see a setting rooted in the kinds of crazy world concepts you see in in old videogames and anime. Worlds where you are just as likely to see androids, laser guns, and giant...

Monte on Life and Death (And Resurrection)

You really need to look beyond "how expensive do we make this spell?" in order to find actual solutions to these problems. The biggest problem with the Raise Dead spell that Mr. Cook doesn't even consider changing is the simple fact that it completely undoes death. I think I've mentioned this...

    D&D 5E (2014) What 5E needs is a hundred classes

This is a terribly over-simplistic way to look at things. You are basically arguing that a raw quantity of options is bad regardless of all other variables or mitigating factors, and that limiting the raw number of options is of a higher priority than ensuring a certain level of quality and...

D&D 5E (2014) Pros and Cons of Kits, Prestige classes and Paragon paths. How 5e should handle it?

I prefer the idea of simply having more classes rather than a system of kits, prestige classes, or paragon paths. See the What 5E needs is a hundred classes thread for what I'd like to see. If you want to use a kit or prestige class to turn a class into what you want to play, wouldn't it just be...

    D&D 5E (2014) What 5E needs is a hundred classes

So, in other words, you think that no martial character should have game mechanics to reflect their unique traits? That every warrior class should be a Fighter because everything is a Fighter? You are using rather circular logic. I think there are tons of perfectly good game mechanics that can...

    D&D 5E (2014) What 5E needs is a hundred classes

I'll completely disagree. Sure, you could combine them, but you lose something in doing so. A heavily armored soldier trained to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with his fellows and fight off a giant horde of foes has nothing in common with the debonair swashbuckler who is trained to fight in 1-on-1...

    Commoner vs Fighter/Rogue vs Wizard/Cleric

Wow, total opposite of me. My complaint with that excerpt is that the DCs are too high, making such feats indeed nearly impossible, even for fairly high-level characters.

    D&D 5E (2014) What 5E needs is a hundred classes

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are asking for, but here is a large list of classes that work better in the 100 class format than the 10 class format. I'll add some notes to those concepts that need a little elaboration. Soldier (frontline military warrior) Warlord (military commander)...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next weekly art column!

This actually bring up a somewhat different, but interesting point. All of this talk about appropriate armor is entirely focused on real world armor with real world problems like overheating in armor and such. But D&D is a game about people running around in magic armor. It is about digging up...

Dragon’s-Eye View 3/28/2012... now with ENW poll!

First off, I gotta say that the discussion about scimitars and sabers is pretty far off from reality. In fact, an arab scimitar and a cossack's saber actually look nearly identical. That sword that Mr. Schindehette is referring to when he mentions scimitar sounds like a sword from Disney's...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next weekly art column!

The pointy hat is a strange subject... For the most part, I think the point hat looks silly and overdone, but if it is done right it can actually work. Somehow. If nothing else, the Tactics Ogre wizards and enchantresses (seen below) can pull it off. So, I guess that style isn't dead yet...

    D&D 5E (2014) What 5E needs is a hundred classes

I've been arguing or this exact approach of lots of classes, each of which are focused and simple, for quite a while. So, I totally support this proposition. :) To address one complaint that is bugging me though... Why do people keep talking like this would result in "pregenerated characters"...

    Rule-of-Three: 03-27-12

Darn it, I liked many previous Rule of Threes, but this one is making me nervous again... Why did he have to go imply that they're considering even dropping the "solo" designation for solo monsters. Does changing a perfectly fine name really benefit anything? Anyways, if they want to create...
