D&D 5E (2014) The case for (and against) a new Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book

I would buy it, because I'm a sucker and I make no bones about that. But I don't need it at all. I've run LMOP and the FR parts of BGDIA. For the former, I expanded out a lot of backstory, information, and external influences to include other parts of the Sword Coast and beyond. I still mine...

D&D 5E (2014) Would you let your player choose their magic items they get?

Not really, no. But I did do one thing at the end of LMOP for my party. I detailed 10ish half-finished magic items that were around the mine. Based on how well they did in retaking the mine (keeping the facilities intact, how many NPC's they saved or kept alive, how well they got along with the...

RPG Evolution: Onward: A D&D Movie for Kids

This was the last movie my wife and I saw in a theater before the lockdown started in earnest. We weren't dying to see it originally, but there wasn't much else out at the time. We both were surprised by just how fun it was, and how much D&D love was built into it. If we didn't already have...

D&D 5E (2014) What would you like to see in 5e books?

In terms of specific books, I think a Plamejammer/XGTE2 book is the best idea. I also happen to think it's our Q4 book this year. But overall, I think 4-5 products a year is solid. Two adventure books per year, with either 1 collection of smaller adventures and one big path, or 2 connected...

D&D General How old are you?

A surprise, to be sure. But a welcome one. My wife and I have agreed that we're bringing our 2070 Xbox and our D&D 17e books to the retirement home. We'll stop gaming when we're dead.

D&D General How old are you?

Jeez. Normally I feel like an old man at 30. But y'all are making me feel like a little baby up in here. I started playing 3-4 years ago. Been playing 5e the majority of the time, though I've had a few dabblings into FFG Star Wars and Apocalypse World. I DM two 5e campaigns that each meet every...

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

I knew rolling would produce problems from the start. So I tried to come up with a whole system of them rolling a pool of numbers from which they all then draft. It was too complicated, not thrilling, and not well received. I abandoned it and let them go with 4d6h3 * 7, dropping lowest one...

    D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus"

Has anyone had to scale up Chapters 4 and 5? I want to really break Chapter 3 out into a sandbox, but I want to keep the levels coming so they don't feel like they're stalling out if/when they explore everything available.

    D&D 5E (2014) Retainers/followers/companions: how?

I know you discounted Sidekicks, but they're working perfectly well for me in my BGDiA campaign so far. The players found the stat blocks pretty easy to understand (considering they're much simpler than a full character sheet). I hand out the statblocks at the beginning of each session and ask...

D&D General What would imps use as a “guard dog”?

It would depend on what you want the CR to be. Hellhounds are CR3 and are the obvious choice. If you need something easier, I'd take a wolf or something similar, give it resistance to fire damage, and give its bite a bonus dice of fire damage. Swap both instances of fire for something else if...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hex Shenanigans

It's bag of rats, yes. In practice, I'd just have my warlock find the nearest bug or bird and do it with that creature. Easier than buying chickens all the time. ...unless we cook the chickens...in which case, the bonus is a delicious breakfast every morning! I withdraw my statement. I'm...

D&D 5E (2014) Survivor 5e Giants (A-L) - Frost Giant gives all its challengers the chills

For reals, I love the multi-armed varieties. Their multiattacks make them much more viable in 1v4 fights with the party. I had a blast running a classic "troll under the bridge" scenario with a four-armed version. I know I'm gonna lose this one, but a guy has to try.
