D&D General Experiences with Empire of the Ghouls, Night Below, or Other Underdark Adventures?

I ran the D series a couple of times D1 has the classic “why are all these monsters living next to each other“ problem and while D2 and D3 were very evocative underground city concepts they had limited built in adventurer interaction ability. I ran Night Below as a 3e/3.5e conversion campaign...

Call of Cthulhu Turns Forty - Chaosium KickStarts a New Printing of the Game's Classic Boxed Sets.

Why is it that despite owning originals of all the stuff that’s on offer I’m still drawn to back it? It does make one reflect on how little it has changed over 40 years and 7 editions compared to say D&D or even Runequest.

D&D General How many hours of D&D would you say you have played in your entire life?

Very much an estimate - table time below. So I’d say about 7,500 hours. This counts some dabbling in pathfinder (as it was pretty similar to 3.5e) and some heavily Homebrewed d&d that was not so heavily homebrewed that I couldn’t just use the monster manuals etc. but doesn’t count other RPGs...

Traveller: rules for side effects of using firearms in a spaceship ?

If movies have taught us nothing else it’s that shooting near pipes is 98% likely to cause a jet of steam/vapour and that panels of electronic equipment will xplode.

Traveller: rules for side effects of using firearms in a spaceship ?

So hypothesising here: The penetrating the hull problem seems a stretch but a slug fired into the metal Interior would likely ricochet about (whether whole or in pieces) a fair bit until it hit something soft like a person or some damageable equipment. Maybe some energy weapons are similar? So...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D5e Dropping to 0 HP Alt Rules

My rules are: Characters unconscious at 0 hp but Hp go to -10 (this reduces the yo yo effect as if you are at -10 it takes not insubstantial healing to be returned to 1hp). Death saves rules are unchanged, rolling a 20 brings you to 1 hp regardless of what you were in when you rolled it. Also...

Traveller: rules for side effects of using firearms in a spaceship ?

I’m new to running Traveller and am looking for advice. One of the conceits in Traveller RPG (all the ones I’ve looked at) is that melee weapons are commonly used in combats aboard a spaceship and the reason generally given is to avoid damaging important equipment. Has anyone seen or homebrewed...

    Your "Pleasantly Surprised" Experiences (Anti-Heartbreakers)

My group plays D&D most of the time and I wanted to play a system that my group didn’t have system mastery to both learn a new game and so the players weren’t too bogged down on trying to achieve maximum mechanical efficiency. So I kinda pushed them into trying Savage Worlds for a bit. I ran...

What is your biggest RPG heartbreak?

Yeah I struggle with SF spacefaring as well, specifically Traveller space truckers style.

What is your biggest RPG heartbreak?

Pendragon, specifically the Great Pendragon Campaign. I love the setting, the base mechanics and the scope of the multi year/generation campaign and managed to convince my D&D centric group to give it a try - they enjoyed the start but trying to integrate the more detailed manor rules and winter...

D&D 5E (2014) Lightning Bolt should be better.

Just because something doesn’t do thunder damage doesn’t mean it’s silent, or even quiet. A maul does bludgeoning damage but makes a noise when it hits. Electricity makes quite a noise when it damages stuff as well. I allow lighting bolt to be forked and thus 10 wide by 50’ long.

D&D General [Challenge] What you want out of a D&D campaign in 100 words or less.

To adventure in a world with mysteries that can be solved, discovered and explored. To battle against foes where victory is possible but not assured. To be able to interact meaningfully with NPCs in ways other than violent such that the method of interaction mattered. To spend only a little time...

AD&D 1E Why did you like the ad&d ranger?

The fact that it had all the fighter stuff and then some. Specifically the bonus vs “giant class humanoids“ and the druid/magic user spells at high level. I wasn’t a fan of the d8 hit dice or stating at 2d8.

    AD&D 1E Giving an AD&D feel to 5e

My main methods to give 5e an AD&D feel is award 1/10th exp and no limit on magic item attunement. My recollections of the game it was about rising levels slowly but getting to try and use all the cool loot you found along the way. I also nerfed Paladins a fair bit.

D&D General What published module have you run or played the most?

I have only rarely revisited modules. Back in the day in my playing circle once you played in it you had “played it” and thee was a concern replaying it would be cheating or would spoil it so you didn’t go back. So the number of modules I played multiple times is very low. I think I played G1 2...

D&D 5E (2014) The -10 Myth: How a Poorly-Worded Gygaxian Rule Became the Modern Death Save

Ok, so I get lots of different ways it was played etc etc but how did the zero hit points rule in the AD&D 1e DMG become the modern death save? Seems like a pretty new mechanic

    D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk: Pitching the Reboot

For years nations pursued their personal and myopic agendas of power. Rel Mord politics was more about who would be sovereign while the Theocracy and the Urnst entities undermined Nyronds power. The silent ones of Keoland supported their nation against their rival nations only rarely focussing...

D&D 5E (2014) AoE spells: Do you play by RAW or RAI?

I play spirit guardians (and moonbeam etc) as doing damage on the turn of the creature in (or entering the area) which seems to be both RAI and RAW and it works well. However I have adjusted the Web spell such that the affected creatures must make their dexterity save the moment it is cast, or...
