D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

I think this is a very good example of CN. I'm currently playing a samurai/ronin character who's very devoted to the code of (fantasy) bushido. This could be CN but ultimately I decided LN was a better match due to my pursuing the notion of "civilization" whereas I think the CN version would...

They're all just descriptive observations, dontchaknow?

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

A functional CN to me seems like a pretty strong loner alignment for a character who's not particularly altruistic. Conan fits it well. He's really never tied down for long and isn't a group-oriented kind of guy. I could also see a "philosophical" Chaotic Neutral that's very nihilistic and...

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

I did always think that LE would have been a better choice but once tPtB decided Llolth was a demon, their alignment became CE. Still, I think they could personally be evil of any alignment. However, their whole crazy family structure does seem to push them in a more lawful direction.

It was one of the reproduced cartoons in the DMG1E.

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

I don't see that fitting Frodo at all. His characteristic act is to exercise mercy on Gollum/Smeagol, which allows him to resist the One Ring until essentially the very end, when Frodo's will finally gives out. However, it is that very act of mercy that puts Gollum in position to destroy the One...

True but mostly what had the gold and didn't want to give it up? It wasn't Papers & Paychecks.

These posts spark a lot of discussion but they're pretty much always studded with "get of my lawn!" digs.

    How Expensive is Too Expensive?

I think you're over-generalizing from your own experience, or at least likely quite out of date experience if it wasn't your own. That may have been true quite some time ago (though I doubt that), but now, I really doubt it. The purchasers that drive the market are adults buying for themselves...

    How Expensive is Too Expensive?

I haven't always been that way with regards to RPG purchases (and am not completely) but yeah, in general, that's the way to slant it, especially when budget and/or space is limited.

    How Expensive is Too Expensive?

Definitely. The much more egalitarian culture (with many flaws, as you noted) that existed in the immediate post-World War II era has been going away. Modern society has more and more become like the Gilded Age. There are lots of other examples of how businesses use price differentiation to...

    How Expensive is Too Expensive?

Definitely. I've bought a number of "interesting" games over the years and more or less had that experience. $250 for me is a lot out the gate for an RPG, though I've dropped more on guitars I didn't like... and fancy dinners with a now ex, too. I'm sure we all know the feeling. I also have to...

    How Expensive is Too Expensive?

Decent booze tends to be expensive in the USA relative to other things. I was just in the Netherlands, where for instance, a reasonable beer and a coke cost about the same thing and there are no free refills on the latter.

    How Expensive is Too Expensive?

Yeah, RPGs are a very inexpensive hobby all things considered. I can think of many hobbies where $250 is not even a way in the door. It's possible to spend a lot but it's also quite possible not to. I've played with a guy for multiple decades now who, I wouldn't be surprised, has spent less...

TSR When TSR Passed On Tolkien

From what I understand, licenses are hard to do. The licensor wants to get paid and usually wants to exercise a good bit of say. The former cuts into the available margin and the latter can be quite complicated to manage, introducing another veto point in the process. It's one reason a lot of...

TSR When TSR Passed On Tolkien

From what I understand the rights are/were also rather a tangled mess. In fact, the sheer number of people needing to get paid was one reason The Hobbit movies became so bloated and crazy. That's a good point. In many respects what did '90s TSR in induced fratricidal competition among lines...

Worlds of Design: Gun vs. Sword

Right and that's why armor and helmets are also crummy in film---they obscure the actor, make the characters hard to tell apart visually, and deny the filmmaker and actor one of the most important tools of emotional expression, namely the face and body. Facelessness usually ratchets up anxiety...

Worlds of Design: Gun vs. Sword

True, although sometimes the designers just don't do a good job. There are plenty of examples of abstractions that don't work out. Yes, this is very true. Abstraction is an essential part of a good design. IMO it's more important for skills to be relevant and useful, which is one reason I'm...

Worlds of Design: Gun vs. Sword

It doesn't film well I think. Not totally. At that point helmets had been well-established in the military. Flak jackets were issued in both Korea and Vietnam and were widely used. Again, I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that it doesn't film well. A bunch of guys in green or tan...
