Ryan Dancey - D&D in a Death Spiral

Most products have a demand spike at publication, then a steep fall off. After not very long at all, the demand for is quite low. Classic examples of this sort of product in RPGs are most adventures -- the people who want them will almost all buy them in the first couple of months. After that...

The Grind Problem (My 2 Cents)

The phenomenon you are referring to is called "random walk" in probability theory. For more information than you probably want, try (for instance) this page.

    Digging a hole

I don't know of any canonical answer, so I'll just give my thoughts: If you are strong and adept with a pick and shovel (you will need both), you might just possibly be able to dig a single 5' x 5' x 10' hole in plowed earth in 8 hours. You could dig out that much sand in less time, but you...

Why is WotC trying to kill my FLGS?

If you're going to consider the positive PR effect of full shelves, you should also consider the negative PR effect of shopworn merchandise and the lack of current product. This is a regrettably common fallacy among small store owners. In retail, you live on turning your stock. For a fuller...

Wizards is giving away a free Magic: The Gathering deck

What is this Canadia of which you speak? Whatever the question, I find it hard to believe that poutine is the answer. 8-)

The return of the lead mini

    1) Europe, while often willing to ban things on insufficient or non-existent data, never went down this particular dead end. 2) If you're interested in more information, you might want to take a look at this thread on the Reaper boards: http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=33261...

Just tried out my new paintbrushes....

Good brushes handled properly will last for months easily, and I know professional painters who paint nearly every day and expect to use the same brush for more than a year. Synthetic brushes and cheap natural hair brushes will last for days, and even when new will not give the performance of...

Can you use a Standard of Valor on yourself?

This would seem to be a case where the FAQ (or Sage?) ruling would apply: "Your allies" or "any ally" (or similar wording) includes you. "An ally" or "your ally" (or similar wording) cannot include you. (Sorry for the lack of a link; can't find the quote on short notice. Take the above with...

How Long Can A Bard Sing For?

The appropriate comparisons, I think, are with chanties*, bagpipers, and fifes and drums. All of those can continue for very long periods through strenuous exercise. I don't think I'd have a problem with 30 minutes at a crack. *Chanties are probably most appropriate for Inspire Competence.

    Parchment Texture Link

The image you posted here looks more like papyrus than parchment. (For reference, parchment is leather.) ps. This doesn't affect its usability for map backgrounds, only its description. pps. Nor have I seen the other images, which might be very different.

    One-shot Design Workshop: Pulp Heroes

If you can find it, I highly recommend Aaron Allston's Lands of Mystery (written for Hero Games long ago) as inspiration for Pulp games. It's intended primarily as a guide for running Lost Worlds games, but the sections of advice are very well done. The book is a first resource for me whenever...

Buying a lamp for painting at night - What to buy?

According to the GE's Reveal website, they have a neodymium coating on the inside of the bulb to raise the color temperature nearer that of true daylight. If you can find any sort of daylight incandescent, though, it will probably suffice. For some graphs that show the issue, you might want to...

What I've Learned From Painting My First Mini in 7+ Years

I generally paint the eyes before the rest of the face, which rather obviates the extreme need for precision in painting. Paint the eye area white; paint a stripe in the color of the iris; then paint a narrow stripe or small dot for the pupil. Once this has been done to your satisfaction, use...

Buying a lamp for painting at night - What to buy?

I use GE Reveal bulbs (incandescent) in swing-arm lamps. They have a decent color temperature; they're inexpensive, and they produce relatively even light across the visible spectrum. I know people who swear by OTT lights, but they're expensive and I think they're too blue. They are much...

    Painting Blonde Hair

I recommend doing a google image search on blonde hair. The range of base colors is wide, and the range of highlight and shadow colors is even wider. I sometimes find it useful to print out a picture of the kind of hair effect I'm looking for and to compare colors area by area. One of the...

Getting Back Into Miniature Painting - What Brushes Do I Need?

It looks like you have plenty of brushes. (You probably won't need all of them, but you'll probably not know which ones you don't need until after you try them.) I would also consider getting a palette if you don't have one, either dry or wet. If you like dry palettes, I prefer a porcelain...

    Using Inks To Shade Miniatures

I don't use inks much, so I'll let others speak directly to that. But I have used flow enhancers when glazing with paints. For my technique, they're not much different than using water, so I usually don't bother. Dish soap should work, but you'll want to be particularly careful not to add too...
