Ok, this has been addressed at length and there is nothing new to add. By decide we mean set the stakes. Whereas this is just wrong. In universe the runes had some cause in the past. The players don't know what it is. Maybe the GM doesn't. But there was a cause. The players are modifying the...

Judge Rules That AI Training Doesn't Violate Copyright

Part of the anthropic case was books that they purchased and scanned.

Seems reasonable in the case where they bought all the books rather than pirating them.

D&D General In this day and age, people still laugh when you invite them to play D&D.

I've had some luck organizing public games, but that is more of "build it and see who comes" than reaching out in person. The people who do show up do appreciate it as a way to build community and make friends at least.

I think we all get that non-causal connections can exist. But when non causal connections are used to generate causal ones that harms verisimilitude. E.g., these runes connect with the characters hopes, therefore the characters hopes cause them to do X.

Yes, I know they didn't decide to win...I stated that several times. But you're not engaging with my core point. With your friends, you can't raffle off things you don't own ... I cannot raffle off Isla Nublar. You cannot have a lottery for a map that doesn't exist. Not in general, but in this...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

Respectfully, you don't know what sources I read, where I have lived, what I have exposure to. It's not that I think the US is representative...its that "literally 95% of people on Earth" is a very strong claim. I did a quick search and found 86% across 63 countries claimed. That seems more...

I'm... doubtful that this is true. But even if it is, the 5% are pretty concentrated in North America and represent a big part of their consumer base. I suspect it can be presented in a way that doesn't bother anyone, though.

This just seems...not at all true. It would be hard to find lotteries for the specific couch you want in your area. You can't win the lottery to direct the next Dune movie. There is no lottery to become mayor of Chicago. Or to be an astronaut. Or for your friend to come back from the dead. Or to...

[James Bond] The next movie directed by Denis Villeneuve

Cool, yeah, that makes sense. I guess the cars and the watches and the suits don't really appeal to me, so I suppose that's part of it. Also the sexism angle, I think, bothers me more than most... enough to crowd out any positives, so for me the franchise comes across primarily for its poor...

[James Bond] The next movie directed by Denis Villeneuve

It has been really interesting to see how different the responses are! I thought my opinion was more widely held. I'd be curious to hear what people find more compelling about the Bond ones. For my part, I think MI does a better job of using an ensemble cast, and imo that adds a lot to this...

You're missing my point here...it isn't about your odds of winning. It's about the bold statement--the prize is specified in advance. This isn't the case in the rune example. Your player has specified what the prize is. I disagree. When the player says "my character examines the runes looking...

[James Bond] The next movie directed by Denis Villeneuve

Yeah, I mean that is really the problem I think :). MI has had a good run and I think its appropriate to end around now. Bond was written for a particular time and context--cold war spycraft--and it doesn't really connect so many years after the fact. Likewise it has a lot of baggage (esp...

Neither is interesting thematically. But as action movies MI are far better, imo.

It isn't about the odds. It's about the stakes. You don't decide to win at poker. You do decide what to play for--a new car, $25,000, the opportunity to make your buddy wear a silly hat. And you decide to play for the runes being a map. Yes. The PC did not create the runes and has no control...

[James Bond] The next movie directed by Denis Villeneuve

DV is very hit and miss for me. I find his films are often on the verge of greatness, gorgeous, trying to deal with some serious questions...but his answers always seem lacking. Dune, for example, is an incredible achievement, but at the same time collapses all of the thematic depth of the books...

Fair, it is more 'director stance' according to that definition. I think that expresses the same point though--Doyle is author and director, while Watson is just actor. By choosing the stakes you have left actor stance, and doing so harms immersion. Thinking more about this: I think we can...

I will perhaps get to some other comments tomorrow. But I've got time for just one or two. I want to look at the lottery comparison. There is a crucial difference between the lottery and the rune case. If I buy a lottery ticket and say "gosh I hope I win the lottery", I am not affecting my odds...

This is also functionally identical. "You are allowed to author new fiction on a 10+" means the players are authoring fiction.
