    Kobold as Viable PC Race?

Races of the Dragon has some alternate class features which makes Kobolds a bit more viable (i.e. Fighter substitution levels giving it a bonus to Str). Still sub-optimal but by no means unplayable. Also a boost if you're going to play a kobold sorcerer (it gains the dragonblood subtype).

    Maximum Hit Points

I usually stick to either the half hp +1 method or RPGA Eberron (basically half hp+1 except for d4 and d12's which get 2 and 8 respectively). But then again, I hate "randomness" (i.e. random stats, random hp). If you want to enforce the randomness of D&D, you should take in the good along with...

    Feats vs. Features

Not necessarily. They can just publish splatbooks with feats instead of classes/prestige classes. The biggest hurdle is complexity. Making everyone "generic" and throwing all the "features" into feats makes going through all the feats and its combinations a big chore. The existing features/feat...

    Crusader in play?

Well if the Cleric is the lone party healer, the Crusader ain't that (although he can help with the occasional healing). As for the random mechanic maneuver, it's really not that much of a disadvantage as long as you pick the right maneuvers to begin with -- you'll have something useful...

    I HATE the term GISH

Personally I think it came into prominence when 3.5 came about and Dragon/Dungeon had released their Incursion arc which had the Githyanki invading the material plane. It was in Dungeon that I first saw the term Gish and when I saw it at the boards, understood what it meant.

    Favored Enemy as a feat?

Player's Guide to Faerun has it as a Regional Feat but you can only take it at 1st level and has a specific monster to which it applies to depending on what region you hail from. Other d20 systems might have it as a feat.

Is craft contingent spell to powerful?

The problem is that a lot of things in the game, under certain specific conditions, can be abused. These items/spells/classes/whatever work okay in isolation or even make great combinations with others. It only becomes broken under a specific set of circumstances. As Michael Silverbane...

Is craft contingent spell to powerful?

Craft Contingency - it costs XP so I think that's a deterrent enough for trying to be prepared for everything. Thought Bottle - A simple example is a 20th-level Wizard who casts Wish 3 times to get a +3 inherent bonus to his stat of choice at only a 500 XP cost. Honestly, a lot of things in...

    I HATE the term GISH

Speaking it out loud, it's three syllables. Typing it, it involves a slash (/). Honestly, gish is easier as a term rather than "Fighter/Mage" ("Elf" would equally do as well). And it's pronouncable.

What do you think of WotC's new combat encounter or "Delve" format?

I might misplace them if I do take them apart. =)

What do you think of WotC's new combat encounter or "Delve" format?

Actually the best way, without needing to do the delve format, is to have two books: one solely for the adventure, another for the stats (sort of like printing what's normally the appendix on a separate book). But of course there's the publishing feasibility problem (i.e. printing two books...

What do you think of WotC's new combat encounter or "Delve" format?

Agreed. But I think the target segment of WotC right now isn't necessarily the veteran GMs but rather making it more accessible to the newer gamers. I'd like to think of the WotC adventures as introduction games while for the more sophisticated (and lethal) adventures, I'd go Dungeon magazine...

    Gargantuan White Dragon!

Besides, you'll probably end up paying the same for it anyway: Gargantuan Black = $29.99 Gargantuan Blue = $39.99 (+$10 from previous) Legend of Drizzt pack = $49.99 (+$10 from previous) Think of it as advanced inflation. =) P.S. The Drizz't is a different sculpt so the Drizz't fans will be...

    Not Reading Ryan Dancy

I think you're confusing marketing with advertising. Marketing is a bit wider in scope, and is considered with the public image of the game/company/the individual. Here's what I inferred from Ryan's post (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of my assuptions): 1) In terms of sheer...

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

First off, there is a shift in mechanics with regards to 1E and 3E. The first one was more vague, and the latter was more, uh, lawyer-ish. It's a shift, a change (and even the new L5R ed was admitting that was the case too in terms of their books--and demands of some of their market). However...

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

Or maybe the Ftr simply wasn't built optimally? And the fact that if I wanted social skills, I wouldn't really pick a Ftr? (I think no one is under the illusion that the 3E Fighter will shine outside of combat.)

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

I disagree on the armor part. Some prefer light, some prefer heavy (just as some prefer Two-Handed Weapons, and others sword-and-board). Of course the reverse could also be said (and probably cheaper): the heavy armor characters get an item that boosts their speed (and what Fighter doesn't carry...

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

As you said, Elric (or a lot of other spellcasters for that matter) don't translate well into 1E terms. God forbid that Gandalf or Merlin or Ged (that's from Earthsea, for those of you who haven't read it) use the Vancian rules for spellcasting. =) But I do think Elric does sort of qualify for...
