    Death in 4e

I'd say they'd actually die if they're affected by some sort of ongoing damage (either an actual Condition or being in a damaging aura). Also, area effects (from both sides of the table) are also likely to be causing deaths to dying characters. In my high level game, no deaths yet due to...

    Epic levels

You're in the 4th Edition Rules forum so I don't think anyone else will mistake it for a different edition. For me "Petrified" counts as dead. Sure, you can be returned back to normal once the battle is over via a Ritual but aside from that (and that's assuming somebody knows that particular...

As far as 4E game design goes, I'll second this assessment. =)

    Epic levels

Not yet epic-level but we're hitting level 20 this weekend. Here's one thing I noticed that's different from the Heroic Tier: 1) Lots of status effects on both sides of the table. Varying on your monster selection, as a GM, you'll be tracking a lot of conditions on players, from ongoing...

Beware this dire warning. Ignore it at your peril!

I think this boiled down to expectations. First off, let's analyze the Purple Worm shall we? It's a level 16 Solo -- belonging to the Paragon Tier. I've noticed that by the Paragon Tier, the "Save or Die" effects start popping up. The Nightwalker has it, the Beholder has it, and in this case...

Beware this dire warning. Ignore it at your peril!

There are, I think, two ways one could have prevented and gotten out of that situation. One is rules familiarity (i.e. knowledge of what ends a grab, using Aid Another actions, etc.). The other is creativity (i.e. Chen and Lost Soul's suggestions). And again, I'd stress that the Purple Worm...

How many 4e saving throws has your character failed in row?

Not me personally but let's put it this way: when I was using the Beholder, the Cleric got petrified. Twice. (And those were saving throws with bonuses.)

Beware this dire warning. Ignore it at your peril!

I disagree. D&D has had situations that can push your off button. Such as death. The point isn't to eliminate it entirely, but not to make it as arbitrary as failing one roll. This isn't apparent but the higher in the tiers you go, the more such situations pop up. Is Swallow Whole a bad...

Beware this dire warning. Ignore it at your peril!

The poster meant using those abilities before the PC got swallowed (i.e. when he was grabbed), not after.

Is it just me, or are WotC minis...

Personally, the sculpts for me are in the mid-range. Not as bad as the first few sets but it's seen better days as well. For some of the sculpts, I think it's a hit or miss. The Carrion Crawler does look a bit goofy (I blame the eyes) but sometimes it might work. P.S. Yes, we have lots of bugs...

Beware this dire warning. Ignore it at your peril!

Actually, we're a bit hard on the poster because this isn't really like 3E. In 3E, you could encounter a Mindflayer and be stunned for 3d4 rounds on a failed saving throw. An unlucky roll screws you for the rest of the game. In 4E, there are such effects such as the Beholder's Petrification...
