I tend to use lots of conspiracies. No matter if it is a Modern game, a Fantasy game or whatever else, there are lots of mysteries to unravel and lots of good guys who end up being bad guys. Though, to be fair, there are alos lots of bad guys who end up being good guys.

For what its worth, the Gadgets book is great. Honestly, it deals with more than just gadgets since you can apply the information in it to magic or a few other 'effects' powers.

I can't survive without a game calander. Of course, I am running a modern supers game so it is almost essential. People need to know what time of year it is and for a GM, important holidays and so on really help add to the flavor of making the world seem real.
