D&D 5E (2024) Rests should be dropped. Stop conflating survival mechanics with resource recovery.

Nod. It’s what I would do. Let’s them keep all the rest mechanics unchanged, removes the problem with low-rest adventures, while still having enough of a limit that people won’t nova every fight. And if SR no longer take an hour, maybe more people will use hit dice for healing in between...

D&D 5E (2024) Rests should be dropped. Stop conflating survival mechanics with resource recovery.

Which is why you’d have to put a limit on rests between long rests.

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Although I’m on record as being interested in trying out the new warlock, I’ve got no problem with keeping Pact magic if they decouple it from short rests. It’s not my idea, but giving Warlocks some sort of arcane recovery would be perfect. Call it Commune with Patron, or Pact Meditation or...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Going the Arcane Recovery route would work. Just balance it to equal the number of expected Short Rests.

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

That’s a very good point. My viewpoint is probably skewed by being a hex blade. If I was one of the other warlock types who relied more on spells, half-caster might not seem so appealing.

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

I don’t think anyone is claiming it’s unfair, just that it changes the math when figuring out if a spell is worth one of your max slots.

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Sorry, I meant they’d only get enough pints to cast the usual 2 maxed. So, 12 points at 7th, not 38. Should have clarified that (but it’s been awhile since I looked at it).

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

They could also solve it by keeping Pact Magic but using the optional spell point system from the DMG. That way, a warlock has enough points for two max level spells, or maybe one max level and a few low level if they choose. Keeps the separate flavour, but still gives the warlock a little...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

The other problem I had with Pact Magic was that so few Warlock spells scaled with level. Being able to cast a spell at max level all the time is great for some spells, but feels like an utter waste for others. I don’t need to cast Hex with a 4th level slot (24 hours sounds great until you...

Yep, like I said, my bad for misunderstanding the initial point :)

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

And boy, I’m glad to see it. I like the idea of specializations, but not if it locks people in too strongly. Nothing worse than finding the wrong magic weapon :)

    D&D 5E (2024) Weapon mastery

Very true. My mistake, I thought they meant stacking multiple abilities in a single shot.

    D&D 5E (2024) Weapon mastery

You can still only use one ability at a time though, no matter how many you add to a weapon. So a Longbow could Slow, or Push, but not both on the same shot (if I’m reading it right)

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

7th level, and then 13th: 7TH LEVEL: WEAPON EXPERT You have honed your use of weapons to an art. Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can choose one of the kinds of Mastery weapons you're using and replace its Mastery property with another Mastery property. The chosen kind of weapon must...

That’s actually a Fighter ability later on: the ability to swap out masteries, and then have more than one available per weapon.

To be fair, Wizard is far from the only Long Rest class.

Yeah, that was actually my suggestion at the time. And it’s one I’d seriously consider using next time I DM.

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

Okay, this has gotten blown way out of proportion. “Not as many as I’d like” doesn’t mean “nerfed into uselessness”. And the TPK thing was more just saying that of course the DM controls the pacing. It’s always been that way. I’m boggled by the idea that the players can just dig in their...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

I’d be okay with that. If it went back to being a 5-min breather after the fight, I’d be fine with that. However, I suppose they looked at how many classes have short rest mechanics versus long rest, and decided it would be easier to move the one way than the other.
