D&D General What makes a TTRPG a "D&D Variant" to you?

This is an interesting definition. Let's unpack it a little. Is it literal. Do you (or Will) mean you have to be able to open up KotBL and be able to run it as is on the fly? What about reskinning? Are you allowed to make it a cyberpunk or post apocalyptic milieu? What even does "play KotBL"...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

I feel like folks spending a loot of time min maxing -- hi r/daggerheart -- are missing the point. But even so it seems super common on that sub.

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

That's what I suggested to my main (mostly D&D related) group.

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

I have said before, I think that Experiences are more like Fate Aspects.

D&D General What makes a TTRPG a "D&D Variant" to you?

I would quibble and say it goes the other way: Shadowdark is an old school style game that employs some 5E-isms in order to streamline play in some areas. I think D&Dness is often overstated, and I don't think it does much for discussion to lump every heroic fantasy game into "D&D-like." If...

I started a thread specifically on this topic, in case anyone wants to continue the discussion without gumming up this thread.

D&D General What makes a TTRPG a "D&D Variant" to you?

[NOTE: I tried to post this in the actual variants subforum but there was no appropriate prefix.] This has come up in a couple threads, so i thought we could focus a discussion on it. Note that this is not a forum rules post, or a post about game geneology or taxonomy. Rather, this is a...

D&D General D&D/TTRPG as therapeutic escape

While I agree that gaming as a particular kind of social activity that works very well as escapism, I am suspect of the idea of the GM is "ministering" or its role as "therapeutic" with being run by an actual therapist. Of course we should care for our friends and provide them support and...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

I think this is too broad to be useful for discussion. Dungeon fantasy or heroic fantasy? Sure. But by your logic I can call Earthdawn a D&D variant because it aims to build a game in which D&D tropes make sense.

Daggerheart Releases Another Round of Playtesting, Including Two New Classes

Ok, that is true I guess, but I am not sure how it is relevant to the concern that Daggerheart will put out more material that one would personally prefer.

Daggerheart Releases Another Round of Playtesting, Including Two New Classes

The thing about publishing pacing is that it does not have to match your purchasing pacing. You can buy, or not, at whatever pace makes you happy.

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

I understand that Daggerheart takes some inspiration from 4E. It even says so. But "it's counts as a 4E variant" is taking it way too far.

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

The great thing is, you don't have to buy it blind. There is an SRD and a TON of free material. Watching lots of these discussions, I think folks are better off investigating for themselves. There are lots of different, sometimes perplexing, interpretations of DH out there ("It's a 4E...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

We had our Daggerheart Session 0 tonight, which we did via Discord and Demiplane even though we are playing in person this coming weekend. I chose Age of Umbra simply because I have been watching the campaign so I feel like I have a decent handle on its particular flavor of DH. One PC is a...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

I have never in my 40 year gaming history seen genuinely "scared" players. I have sent them disturbed and perplexed and even tense, but never scared. The medium just doesn't support it IME.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I have not watched any of C3 so maybe this is standard, but it just struck me that all the ads in Umbra are in-house. That is actually a pretty strong indicator of success, not having to take ad money. I wonder if the terrain and minis are sponsored.
