    D&D 5E (2014) Some things I don't care for in the D&D culture

You're tempting me. I'm sorely tempted to find a copy of the Class Handbooks and rewrite them using my own design paradigm and sensibilities of what makes "a cool class". And to sort of rewrite this history of game mechanics design concepts, as it were... I feel that what makes a fantasy...

D&D 5E (2014) Quiet players and social anxiety

My advice is watch some episodes of Gomer Pyle, seriously. In just 3 episodes you'll likely see how to make a caricature out of anger without actually having to summon any real anger. Or pick some other classically angry character from fiction that you like better and imitate the motions of that.

    D&D 5E (2014) Some things I don't care for in the D&D culture

Thanks for all the thoughts, people! Morrus, I would say you're correct from a practical standpoint. I never set out to say "I like rules-light games", but also I don't garner any benefit from having more rules. But there are two specific distinctions to 3E rules that are far more important...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some things I don't care for in the D&D culture

Hussar, by balance we mean the same thing: balance of mechanical options for the players. In roleplaying, I don't want a set of rules/mechanics to dictate this for me. I want the discussion that's been happening around the table to determine what makes sense to the group. To avoid what you...

D&D 5E (2024) Twelve actions for an even fresher 6th edition, or for an ultra-basic retooling of 5e

FWIW, I don't find the "one level per session" pace appealing. I think it's just as simple to provide three options, fast pace, slow pace and one in-between. I'd be more interested in a level per 5-10 sessions (slow pace). Medium would, I guess be every 2-3. But I see what you're trying to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some things I don't care for in the D&D culture

Haha, that's ok. I'm open to others' opinions and experiences and I want to know ALL THE THINGS. I should point out that I didn't necessarily say that I'm into escapism, just imagination. And yeah, I can agree with DaveDash that writing fiction bores me too :) I'll start with the first one...

    Non thieves and Thieving Skills

They fail. In those additions it's assumed that they aren't skilled in those kinds of things. To put in 3rd edition terms, those are all skills that require training to attempt. I know the pick pockets is stretching it, but there you go in terms of early days mentality.

    D&D 5E (2014) Some things I don't care for in the D&D culture

Crap, didn't mean for this to go specifically into the 5E sub-forum. If anyone can move it to general I guess it's more appropriate there. Although getting the perspective from 5E players specifically would also be enlightening :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Some things I don't care for in the D&D culture

Hey guys, I haven't posted in years because I've been away from D&D. I've done some private writing about D&D to understand why I don't like it anymore, and I'm curious what peoples' thoughts on these cultural elements I've identified are. If I'm alone or if there are actually some subcultures...

    New Fighter Build: Shieldbearer

Why not a paragon path for the sword and board? I don't see the benefit of this being a new build. Maybe you could post what the purpose and design intent is for this before posting more rules?

Could All Weapons Just Do The Same Damage?

This is a real solution. Here is my iteration to it: All 1-handed are Prof +3, 1d8 damage Plus you have these options when forging/buying any 1-handed weapon Lower damage dice or Prof and make it heavy thrown Lower damage dice or Prof and make it Off-hand Lower damage dice or Prof and...

Two new Standard Actions for versatility

Thought I'd share some simple little ideas I had that could give your players some options they are probably going to ask for anyway. I originally posted these on the official boards. I'm unfamiliar with cross posting and external quoting rules, so I'll just post links to be safe. (Edit: Okay, I...

    Readying a move or charge?

I noticed a thread where someone posted this very clever trick to avoid OA's from your movement: Is this really legal? You could also do this with a move so as not to have to provoke OA. I would say that to legally declare a move though, you'd have to include the full movement in the...

D&D 4E Forked Thread: Some Thoughts on 4e

I think homogenous is a great word. The fact that 4E is "all about damage" (which is an exaggeration, but based on truth) is, I think, the main reason people accuse 4E of being a video game or, more specifically an MMO.

Quickdraw needed for throwing muliple daggers?

There would have to actually be powers that let you throw multiple hand axes in the first place! I haven't come across any yet. The rogue abilities require a light blade and the ranger abilities require a bow.

Quickdraw needed for throwing muliple daggers?

I'm going to double post to counter argument myself here, because everything I feel tells me wizards would say my house rule here is unnecessary. I think the idea behind powers is that you don't need any other special feats or abilities to use them. When you do, it says very clearly...

Quickdraw needed for throwing muliple daggers?

This sounds like a good point, too. A character can only wield two daggers total, but that doesn't mean he can't hold (negating the ability to wield in that hand) several daggers in his off hand. So I think I'm going to house-rule this way (just in case -- I'm not saying it's needed): the...

Quickdraw needed for throwing muliple daggers?

This is what I was thinking.

Quickdraw needed for throwing muliple daggers?

It explains in the Load section of weapons that any power that attacks multiple targets accounts for the reload time of a weapon in the power. What about thrown weapons? They don't have a 'reload time' but they obviously require that you draw each dagger before you have it available to attack...

In substantial monsters hit point totals.

Have you guys thought about creating different HP formulae based on combat role? Or, taking into account the number of powers granted?
