    Balancing Save-or-Die

How does the massive flat damage fail to achieve that high? Additionally: At level 1, a troll shouldn't go down easily to your assassin. He's a match for your whole party. At level 10, that troll should go down to your death attack. So, does that troll have a "doesn't get killed" effect...

    Balancing Save-or-Die

Then don't make it a damage roll. Not all damage has to be a roll. If you have it deal a flat, massive, amount of damage, it either kills them (if they're not a massive guy like Asmodeus) or doesn't. And you don't need a special rule saying "Monsters with HD equal to your level+x or higher...

    Balancing Save-or-Die

On a different note though: I like mechanics for the assassin that essentially say "If you reduce an enemy to X or less HP, they instead die" Phantom bonus damage that only applies if it finishes the fight. Serves two roles: 1) The assassin gets the killing blow most often. Makes sense. 2) When...

    Balancing Save-or-Die

If a little goblin or elf takes megadamage, they die. If it's "Save or massive damage" on Asmodeus, why not have it be "Save or massive damage" on everyone? Most things will just die; but you don't have to put in extra rules. Asmodeus has enough HP to take it.

    38) There are no weapons but people. Fortunatley, these come in all sizes, and 57 varieties, 2 of which are halflings and gnomes. While it is possible to gain "Weapon Proficiency: Unconscious Half-ogre" we strongly advise that you use a dead one instead.

Why do we really need HP to represent things other than physical injuries?

Why do you track "Hit Points" and Heroic Surges as seperate things if they're always equal? For flavour, I prefer modifying surges into wounds to calling surges Hit Points. If nothing else, letting hitpoints remain hitpoints seems like it'll ease entry. Although Heroic Points are, at least...

Why do we really need HP to represent things other than physical injuries?

It's possible, though rare, to survive a fall during which you reached Terminal Velocity. It requires a heck of a lot of luck though :p

    19) While ability scores are pointbuy, there is still a random element to character generation, as you roll 1d20 to determine your starting level.

14- Whenever they wish to cast a spell, the player must demonstrate a magic trick. If the GM can work out how it was done, the spell fails. They must use a different trick each time.

    D&D 5E (2014) Crazy Ideas 5E Should Not Adopt

I considered posting a thread like this on the WotC forums, but thought it would be edition-war bait. However, with Piratecat watching out, I suspect no-one wants a vacation off the end of a plank :p. 9) Everything that isn't explicitly created by a spell obeys the laws of physics exactly...

    D&D 5E (2014) How should 5e handle rules problems?

A point of importance to me: If you don't know why something was broken, you're not ready to fix it. If you find a multi-attack power, combined with a certain paragon path, is a broken combo, and you fix the paragon path, that seems fine. But then, another paragon path comes out, and the...

Are adventures/modules more important than system?

The system decides how the game will actually play. The adventures decide how the game will be perceived. If you want to pull people in, you need the adventures. Even people who don't use them will often judge it based on them, directly or indirectly. If you want to keep people, and have the...

Why do we really need HP to represent things other than physical injuries?

So say people who don't actually understand 4e. You say it was never just damage. Okay then. So, let's start: why is that a sucking chest wound, rather than, as used in the rest of your post, a nick, scratch or bruise? Why is it being healed, rather than, as used in the rest of your post...

    The defender's masochism

What's your opinion on the Defender Aura mechanic?

    The defender's masochism

You can easily "mark" (to use sports terminology) one of them, and prevent that one getting past. Sure, you can't block ALL of them, but you can block SOME of them, slowing down the flood. Except that, in those cases you describe, you're being less effective than if you just went and hit...

Why do we really need HP to represent things other than physical injuries?

One idea I came up with to help Essentially, you're restoring the HP, because the HP is the capability they have right then. Sure, they may have an arrow in them, but they've pushed past it, they can ignore it for now. But they can only take so many wounds before they're done.

    The defender's masochism

You're a Fighter. Let's say Sword-and-Shield. You have trained in the Guardian School. You know you're tougher than your allies, and better defended, and you can't bear to imagine standing there, at the end of the fight, cowering behind your shield while they're dead. But, as I say, you're...

    The defender's masochism

Yeah, that's a bug. Honestly, the combat superiority feature was one of my favourite parts of the fighter. Even without the ability to mark, combat superiority give you an ability to block people reasonably effectively. I hope combat superiority is an available fighter feature in 5th, that has...

    The defender's masochism

If you're a two-handed fighter, or a two-weapon fighter, you can be dishing out some quite major pain on that extra attack. And, importantly, at higher levels it becomes less a case of "ignore me and I'll hurt you" and more a case of "ignore me and I'll cripple you" if you pick up feats to make...
