What Does Your Favorite RPG Do Best?

I second HackMaster (new edition). What does it do better than other systems? Combat 1) second by second combat --- You arent locked into rounds or turns. It doesnt take minutes until your its your turn to play. Combat doesnt take a couple hours to complete, even WITH full combat rules...

    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

Yeah, it is a good chunk. However, you get 400 pages of (i believe) 10pt font, a plethora of optional crunch, fake leather binding, 4.5 pounds of full color goodness. This book is on par with, and even surpases, some of the 100+ dollar special collectors edition books that other companies...

    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

Yes, I do believe KJSEvans was referring to the new iteration (HackMaster) as opposed to the older version (HackMaster 4th edition). K&Co decided to keep the 5th edition suffix off of the new HM to emphasize that this was not a sequal or a continuance of the spoof/parody game, but a game unto...

    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

I simply see no parody at all in this game. There is humor, yes, but there is no parody. This system was built from the ground up, incorportating different mechanics than DnD. HM4e was a full-blown parody, it's true. This new edition is not; it is it's own creation. That, really, is my only...

    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

Honor also involves alignment. So when you add all of these together, Class type, Alignment, Racial tendancies, Background, Quirks, Flaws, you have a character that is unique. A thief character that has the Greedy, Swindler, and or Miser quirk will be more inclined to screw over the party...

    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

Also, the game is designed to be tailored to the gaming group with most rules optional. Simply talk to the GM and come to an agreement on what constitutes an honor hit. This way, you arent surprised by low scores in an honor category. Sometimes, sacrificing honor for the benefit of the group...

    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

Definitely true. If you do not roleplay your class, race, quirks and flaws, then you get docked honor. Low Honor could eventually be detrimental, and has an impact on your standing in the game world. It also incurs negatives to certain rolls.

    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

HackMaster DOES include plate armor. It is simply not in the Basic book (which covers everything needed up to level 5) because it is advanced/expensive armor. Just like how there is no higher level spells in HMBasic, like Teleport. The game has them, just not the basic book.

    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

Think of this simply as a free update/errata with bonus features. Updates to the rules and 3 free adventures (1 of which is a side adventure straight from the Frandor's Keep module).

    Examples of good sandbox campaigns

For the new HackMaster or HackMaster Basic setting of Tellene, Frandor's Keep has enough campaign materials to last you several months of play. Many plothooks.

Hackmaster Advanced Players Handbook ('5th Edition')

Yeah, Gary Jackson can be a little over-zealous when it comes to the role of the GM vs the players. However, instead of being 'adversarial", I would say that the GM needs to challenge the players, not give them the game. The players will need to work as a team or else, well. they 'will' die...

    The Player/GM relationship.

Eventually you will come to the part where you roll the die...look up at her adorable smile.. you will reach over and cup a hand under her chin, and say < sweetheart. it's time for me to say those 3 special little words that I have longed to say.. Roll another character." But make sure you...

What's a rogue to you? Question on the relevance of a class.

But HackMaster (not 4e) has done it, and done it very well. There are Honor points, Luck Points, Chivalry Points (for knights and paladins). So, yeah, it can be done, IF the developer of the system will include it from the beginning, and not tack it on at then end.

What's a rogue to you? Question on the relevance of a class.

That is where the death of the game comes into play, When you have an optional mechanic that wasn't built for system. Either the system (DnD5e, for example) has to be built to use the luck-point mechanic, or you don't use it at all. It can't be both (optional). If it's not made to handle it...

What's a rogue to you? Question on the relevance of a class.

I really like how HackMaster handles it. Thief class: Core thief skills (trap skills: disarm, identify and design), pickpocketing, sneaking, hiding, climbing/rappelling. Stealth, Increased initiative bonus, back-stabbing, coup-de-gras bonus. Luck Points (used to offset bad rolls of the...

Will Next be able to do HackMaster?

I've also read this whole thread 3 different times, and am thoroughly confused. At one point the conversation talks about HM4e, and comparing it to DnD4e, then skips to HM5e and back to 4e (HM or Dnd, im unsure at this point). Regardless, HM4e and HM are two totally separate games. One (HM4e)...

Help me find a spell on EN World forums.

I found this via google. But I doubt if that is what you are looking for.

    I want to tell you something...but I won't.

One thing that I would do. Let us say that the PC need to know some very specific information in order to progress the campaign to the next phase. For example, the followed the Evil Priest down a hallway and into a room that he bolted shut. Upon bashing the door, they found the priest gone...

    I never "got" the Cleric

HackMaster does Clerics quite differently. There are 43 gods in the Kalamar system, and there are 43 cleric classes. Each class will have its own ethos, its own spell list, their own special leveled abilities, bonuses, traits, talents, skill selection, etc.. For example: The Cleric of the...
