[Hackmaster] To anyone who's ever been slightly interested in trying this game out...

I can see where you are coming from. And in essence, you are somewhat correct. However, also compare this... HM allows complete movement freedom every second. This allows you to literally dance across the battlefield, while STILL being fully engaged in combat while your opponent follows...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who's given up on D&D Next?

I have noticed that a lot of the ideas they are using for creating DnDNxt have already been utilized by the Pathfinder forums as well as HackMaster. public beta testing requesting input from the fans (whether they listen is another thing altogether) also, some of the mechanics that I have been...

I was wrong in my review. Plate Mail has DR of 7 and DEF -5. It actually makes you easier to hit (by 5), but less damage gets through.

Sure, you can attack a stationary target every second, and do some major damage with each attack, however, you won't be able to attack (and land a significant blow) on a constantly moving/counterattacking target every second. Oh, you might can get a swing in more often if you fight...

HackMaster Player's Handbook, 5th Edition Publisher - Kenzer & Company This core book is the second in the newest iteration of the HackMaster line, which started with the Hacklopedia of Beasts. Technically, it started with HMBasic, but since this is an extension and expansion of those basic...

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I first read the speeds. However, there are advanced (optional) rules. Jab, Hold at Bay, Aggressive Attack, Charge, Tactical Move, Readying Against Charge, Fight Defensively, Full Parry, Give Ground, Scamper Back, Fighting Withdrawal, Flee, Rear Attacks, and...

    Strategic Level Game System

If your characters wish to actually BUILD their castles and fortifications, then I highly recommend Kenzer & Company's HackMaster 4e supplement "Lord Flataroy's Guide to Fortifications". VERY in-depth construction guides. I'm unsure if there is much on ruling, but for building, there are tons...

    Looking for new RPG

You are right in that there are a lot of rules, but most of the rules are optional. 95% of the combat rules are optional. Character creation, while at the beginning might take some time to get used to, you can create a full character in 10 minutes, 20 if you use the optional background...

    Looking for new RPG

I know nothing about SavageWorld. I got rid of a dozen game systems and pared myself for two only..HackMaster and Pathfinder. And honestly, when I play PF, I keep missing the rules for HM. Although I am certain others will add in their 2 cents as well, and you will definatley get some input...

    Looking for new RPG

HackMaster (the newest version) has a very quick combat system. 1) All movement is based on seconds, not rounds. SO every seconds, everyone has an action. 90% of the combat rules are optional, and if you wish to use them, you can. Otherwise, you don't have to. 2) There is no AC. No...

We are up to Release Candidate 3 (as opposed to Beta 2.3 when the OP posted), and the final editing touch-ups are being completed this weekend. The final page count is 400. Don't let the book size fool you. This game can be as simple or as complex as you want it. The basic combat system...

Very true. Also, the monster are retro. Kobolds are not dragons, but dogs. Orcs are pig-snouted, tusked humanoids, and halflings are curly-haired, hairy-footed shorties! Actually, if you wanted to go the cheapest route, 14.99 for the HMb PDF and 39.99 for the Hob PDF. That's less than $55.

    AHM Hacklopedia of Beasts pictures

for 3.5 or even 4.0 and pathfinder, this book could still be quite useful. I would use the statblocks and gameplay mechanics of your game, and add to it the bits and flavourings of the HoB. Climate & Terrain preferences Combat/Tactics information Signs and Tracks charts Habitat and Society...
