Yeah. :) That's okay. I learned something from all this (slings are a lot harder to use than anyone thought) so it's all good. Thanks!

    My House Rules

4d6, reroll 1, and drop the low die is a perfectly reasonable system. Where your DM went wrong is allowing the "if you roll 4 of identical numbers, add them all" and adding 4-8 on top of that. My old DM used the 4d6 system; we ended up with slightly-above-average stats (11-16, with the...

    My House Rules

Only a couple comments here. Helmets: All armors include helms; since they have no in-game effect, they're just not noted. It's perfectly reasonable to attach penalties to certain types of armor, or rule that you can use different helms with different types of armor. If you go the latter route...

I figure effective range is up to 1 range increment. After that, you start suffering penalties - reflected by the fact that it becomes increasingly harder to hit anything. In this, the ranges are more or less accurate - the world-record shot for a longbow, for instance, is just over 1000 feet...

Found it. Very interesting discussion, and I found a secondary link to a site that compares bows, slings, and firearms. It pretty well backs up what you guys have been telling me - slings require a massive amount (nearly a lifetime)of training to make them worthwhile. They've also got a range...

Yeah, I was thinking that too. If I make it 13, there's no reason not to simply get a composite bow. Slings used to have bullets and stones, with different stats for each - sling bullets dealt 1d6, while stones were 1d4. I looked up slings on Wikipedia. It's a fascinating article - apparently...

Seeking comments regarding tweaked base classes (Fighter & Ranger)

*nods* That was my intent too. My original fighter had four fighting styles, but people pointed out that it didn't fix any of the "acknowledged" problems, so I went back to the drawing board. My second version is on page 3 of the thread I mentioned earlier; I tore apart all the fighting styles...

Cestus isn't in the PHB, but I'd agree. Sap is closer to a club, IMO. Punching dagger does use a punching action... it could fall under unarmed as a martial weapon. Yeah... It could go either way - kukri is a slashing weapon, but it's also Light. It's not a perfect fit It's the same basic...

Slight OT post regarding weapon groups: I've been waffling about this for over a week now, debating whether or not I really want to do it. Finally, I decided to make a list of pros and cons, and to see exactly how much work it would entail. As it turns out, not much - here's what I've got...

Well that's helpful. :p I was thinking of sticking it at L16 and making it once/combat instead of 3/day.

Yeah, it might be. Maybe something like, "Three times per day, the fighter can reroll any attack that misses by 5 or less. This represents the vagaries of luck and the fighter's skill in combat."? Obviously it would need a bit more than that - that's pretty weak for a L19 ability - but it's a...

Seeking comments regarding tweaked base classes (Fighter & Ranger)

The fighter is still bland and weak. I recommend checking out the thread on this forum about the Project Phoenix fighter - you can get some ideas of how to make it more powerful without having to overhaul the system. The ranger doesn't get much, although the new abilities are nice. I would...

Yay, more changes! I edited the lastest version of the fighter (see post above) to encompass the changes I made last night, as well as the ones suggested here. I added an ability at 4th level. The class abilities were supposed to be 1, 4, 7, 10, etc., but I missed 4th level for some reason...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 HR – Codex Gigas

You should take a look at nonsi's version of that rule. He does it so that heavy weapons get fewer attacks/round, while lighter weapons get more. It balances out the overall damage output, as I noted; not my thing, but you might find it useful.

Not saying much, but thanks. :) Agreed. I was doing some work on this last night, and I moved it to L7 and renamed it Combat Awareness - still lags behind the rogue, but it's a bit more useful. I left IUD at 16, but I might swap it and Spell Parry. I don't know that one. Dazing is pretty...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 HR – Codex Gigas

Yeah. Yeah... "fighter" pretty well encompasses "any class with a good BAB". Got it in one. Epic is hardly all balanced, barely playtested (the rules were leaked early, which leads most folks to believe they rushed the final book out before it was fully tested), and not at all interesting. I...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 HR – Codex Gigas

I decided to reply over here about the weapon speed thing, since we're discussing your system and not mine. :) I took a second, closer, look at it, and now I understand it better. A heavy weapon grants iteratives at -6, a medium at -5, and a light at -4. I assume the parenthetical notations...

Okay, so here's what I've got after some work. I totally dismantled the combat style system and went over all the abilities, organizing them into feats or usable fighter abilities. Imposing Size, Lunge, Improved Lunge, Shield Focus, Improved Parry, Repulse Attack, Close Quarters Combat, and...

Project Phoenix fighter discussion (Forked from: Feat Points)

Yes. Yeah, I changed how they worked between post 1 and post 2. *shrug* I thought a Grandmaster should be, you know, high level - not 12th. Looking at it now, though, I might just leave them as they were and maybe add in Weapon Supremacy at 12th, then bump WGM to 16th. It's to maneuvers made...

What nerf-bat? All I'm doing is replacing the WF feat tree with similar feats that have better benefits. Compare: WF: Same WS: Ftr lvl 4, WF; +2 damage VS. BAB +6, WF, +2 damage and +2 attacks for maneuvers. WM (replaces GWF): Ftr lvl 8, WF; +1 to attack VS. Ftr lvl 11, WF, WS, +1 attack and...
