    Towards a Workable RPG Theory

That's a very good point. mythusmage, is it possible you could create a separate account for your admin/moderator posts and your regular posts? It doesn't look good for ENWorld at all for someone with "This is my moderator voice" in big red text in their sig, and who can't be ignorelisted, to...

    What is "The Forge?"

This is a sad thread to read.. Lotta bitter-sounding people, slapping themselves on the back, crowing about how much some other website sucks. The Forge, on the other hand, has threads about people enjoying themselves and discussing gaming. Yep, you guys sure showed them. ;)

Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

I don't think heavy description and "mature" play are the same thing. We wrestle with some pretty heavy moral dilemmas in our games, and cover a lot of mature subjects. But we don't necessarily use heavy description and lots of dialog while we're doing it.

Give Me Moral Dilemmas for my PCs!

Here's how I like to handle it: Have the moral dilemmas come up through play, by letting characters with goals and strong opinions come up against issues you've "seeded" into the world. For example, I'm a fan of Sweet20's experience system. It involves having the players choose Keys for their...

    A dilema

Yeah, sorry, I'm not gonna budge on this. I totally disagree, or to be more precise, I wouldn't care if they got upset or not. It's not like I'm unfamiliar with open relationships; it's that I am (acquaintances and friends), and that I've seen the difference between an open, honest, relatively...

    A dilema

Okay, here's how I see it. If it's an open marraige, then there's no harm in telling the husband. If it isn't, I couldn't personally not tell him. Regardless of all that, both the woman and your housemate are being unbelievably rude by putting you in a situation where you have to worry about...

All I want is a necromancer without gimmiks

I've never had a problem with clerics without gods, so I just use the cleric approach. The other, easier option is probably to move the Animate Dead line over to also be available as a wizard spell.

If our Hobby has a problem, it is the difficulty of interpersonal communcation.

Point taken. (And I think you're being too polite about Edena's backseat modding -- just ignore it.)

If our Hobby has a problem, it is the difficulty of interpersonal communcation.

I'd rather phrase it this way: It's much easier to play a roleplaying game if the people in the group are functional, emotionally healthy people who are able to communicate. i.e., not damaged goods. Or to put it another way: If you're going to perform group activities, you should have the...

If our Hobby has a problem, it is the difficulty of interpersonal communcation.

There's nothing magical about being able to communicate with other people. I'd argue that outside of the hobby, it's not considered any kind of special, rare skill. I've thought for a long time that if games didn't put all the power in one person's hands, that person wouldn't have to work so...

Smart vs. Intelligence and Combatless Roleplaying Sessions

The best advice I can give about any of this is to keep what you're doing: Listening to the players. They gave feedback, and that's great. It sounds like your players enjoy different things, and that the ones who were most engrossed with the dungeon crawl were less "into" the town interactions...

GMing: "getting Even" vs "getting it right"

I figured I'd chime in over here, as well, since the discussion's going very differently. I like "make them pay", with the (very large) caveat that I'm talking about "pay" as in "pay for beer", not as in "pay for your crimes". :) I think it's possible to, say, modify the system so that if...

Charles Ryan speaks - 4.6 million Americans claim to play D&D

Okay, great, it's a statistical analysis. Thank you.

    "Okay, I'll just lie here..."

Jubilee, that sounds really, really awful. I think you should put your foot down and tell your husband that you're not willing to be bored just so he can have you around. Or at least bring a book, or something. This is that same GM that Sniffles said has no other social outlets other than...

    "Okay, I'll just lie here..."

Heck, in my group if we have a fifteen-minute long combat, and everyone's conscious and involved till the end, they're bored silly. I'm bored by that point, too, though, so we don't usually spend that long on fights. God bless my group, for we are uniquely suited for each other. Regardless...

What do you like best about being a GM?

I enjoy facilitating a good time for everyone, and making sure everybody has plenty of juicy conflicts. It's not very satisfying to play both sides of the board at once, so to speak, so I let the players decide what their goals will be, and I make sure there's enough opposition and conflcit that...

Backgrounds--Does your PC have one? Does it get used?

When I GM, if the players don't come up with backgrounds, motivations, and goals for there characters, there's no game. I don't need a ton of backstory, but i construct the campaign as a series of player-driven subplots that wind together and interconnect. Oh sure, there's NPCs off pursuing...

Making the poor suckers earn it...

Maybe pitch it to your players, and see if they find it interesting? That seems like a necessary prerequisite.

    Sweet20 Experience Rules Discussion.

Sorry again for posting so much. If this doesn't interest you, please just skip it. This is Vincent Baker's description of GNS, from the link above. Keep in mind that Keys could be used as a tool to "Say Something"; that's how it's relevant.

    Sweet20 Experience Rules Discussion.

Oof. Dude, I wouldn't phrase this in terms of GNS theory. That's a total quagmire that you really don't want to get into, trust me. I've seen tons of flame wars where people got up in arms about "being labeled" or something. Also, GNS isn't a predictive taxonomy (in that no game or player ever...
