Thanks for making the thread, Calithena. I was really surprised by the poll results - could a myth about current D&D players have been dispelled, or is it due to sample bias?

I have little of note to add, except that the main illustrator of the early releases, Janet Trautvetter, drew some really-hot-in-a-plain-Jane-sense women. Realistically equipped in chain mail, even. I wish more artists did this today. That's all. :D

My favourite city encounter system is Judges Guild's charts in City State of the Invincible Overlord. It is reasonably easy to use, but has enough subtables and attendant tables (e.g. "Questioned by Guards or Constables" or "Craftsman Profession") to provide a lot of variety. In the City State...
