Curse of the Azure Bonds - your experiences?

Like many others, I only played the Gold Box game. It was a lot of fun, although not as good as Secret of the Silver Blades (which was the best of that series).

    Favorite magical item

The potion of clairvoyance is an oft overlooked, but very useful concoction. There is also oil of fiery burning, also known as "bottled fireball". In general, potions are a lot of fun, especially with a good miscibility chart...

    AD&D1 giants

Was the "if it has more than +3 to its Hp, it hits as a higher HD monster" rule added in 2nd edition, or already present in 1st?

What was your favorite monster (from MM, FF, or MM2)

Clearly, the correct answer is Giant Frogs. They are the perfect embodiment of the weird and whimsical Gygaxian style... even if they first appeared in Dave Arneson's Blackmoor! It isn't easy choosing between the greats - gelatinous cubes, green slime, rust monsters, beholders and such come to...

So what is your favorite module, ever?

Dark Tower, for both concept and execution, wins it for me. The runner up would be Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan; for pretty much the same reasons.

Did someone declare January "Edition Wars" month?

Didn't OSU/GWU have something like that, though?

What do you consider a "railroading" module?

Any module where decisions are made in stead of the PCs/players outside establishing the starting conditions. I think that's a vital distinction. In campaigns, even the latter may be railroading in some cases - but in its milder forms, probably acceptable in order to get the game going.

What's the difference between D20 Fantasy and D&D?

Yeah. A lame derogatory term for "It is not D&D, kids, now get off my lawn." Pretty useless for normal discourse - and IMHO just as insulting as the "rose coloured glasses! Nostalgia!" and the "outdated technology!" arguments. We would be better off these three died a horrible death.

    AD&D1 is like a B-17

Well, let me sum it up: Old editions = obsolote, outdated trash New editions = shiny awesome!!! :\ Way to go, Ace...

What is wrong with race class limits?

I wonder how large a part it is.

What is wrong with race class limits?

In all the thread, this is probably the best point. Given the time required to gain levels in 1e and 2e, level limits were a much lesser nuisance than people suggest. Going from personal experience, characters above 10th level were extremely rare. In all the campaigns I have run, only one PC...

    Dungeons of Castle Blackmoor

Imagine sitting down with your group, letting them sucked through by a glowing portal (or whatever), and showing them the 1e DMG cover in full glory. "That's where you are. That guy with the sword and the shield? Yes. That's you. And the wizard? That's Joe. Roll initiative!" :D

    Delving against Erac's Cousin

Thanks for the update, dungeondelver. I knew some of the earlier details, but not the new stuff.

    Gygax is the master mapper?

Oh, I have been doing that for a while. "I waited patiently for Castle Zagyg, and all I got was the Yggsburgh supplement." With the district modules, to boot! ;)

    Gygax is the master mapper?

No mistake, Gary has made some very good maps during his reign. He is definitely part of my Top Three Dungeon Mappers Triumvirate, sharing this position with Paul Jaquays (excellent 3D perspective) and Bob Bledsaw (just very good at it).

    Iconic 1E characters?

Yes, pretty much. While there are a lot of play examples in 1st edition or basic sets, they usually use throwaway characters who don't return later on. The Basic party is an exception, but even in their case, they don't approach the 3e iconic characters. They appear less often, and are less...

Is there any real world analogue to the Adventurer?

    Best reply so far. :D

Do your players ever suffer real defeat?

It happens both as a player and as a DM. As a player, I would feel cheated if it was obvious that we were losing, but the DM saved us anyway. That means there are no consequences in the game, and what we do is ultimately meaningless because "story" is more important than us players.

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

This pretty much sums up my perspective.

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

Heh heh, that's one of those great, overlooked points... :] As for the question of the topic, while 3e did the "return to the dungeon" thing, there seems to have a break in the design philosophy - from "places to explore", dungeons became "scenery" for plot-based or semi-plot based...
