My first proper 4E game - Our reaction.

    Annoying Conspiricy Thread

I think they do that just to irritate me. They love using the cool Greyhawk names and dungeons, which are their property; but they use it to taunt us Greyhawk fans. All the names and locations are part of this POL setting that they are creating. I mourn for Greyhawk, along with Dungeon and...

Will lack of 3rd party support affect your 4E play?

It will affect my play. I've never really liked most of the stuff from WoTC, so the 3rd party stuff really is what got me to keep up with the core stuff. Now I can decide my fate and go to Pathfinder with a knowledge that I'm choosing talent over brand.

    4e D&D GSL Live

This is very disappointing. I prefer 3rd party for Campaign Worlds and Adventures, and this effectively hamstrings them. Maybe it's a way to ensure that only the Wizards sub-standard fare is all we get. I guess I'm finally sure that I'm going Pathfinder, Golarian beats the 4E implied universe...

Pramas on 4E and New Gamers

I'm going to post this before I read the thread. I think he is dead on. In fact I don't think anything since the BECMI era really was a good blind sell for D&D. I've been playing for many moons and many versions and I'm still having a hard time getting my head around some parts of the new...

How were you first introduced to D&D?

I was in elementary school and was really into Greek and Norse mythology. A friend of mine saw some of my arguably crude drawings of Perseus and Medusa and mentioned he played a game where you could be like Perseus. Intrigued I tried it out, and LOVED it. I had a major time convincing my...

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

If I was called on to fill a role, I would gleefully. I joined late with several groups, they told me what they lacked and I played it. If I play from the beginning, I play what I want and let the game grow organically. I'm pretty easy as far as what class I play goes.

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

I always get confused when I read things like this. I always played the class I wanted to play. I never bothered to see if it fit into the game first, I found a way to fit it into the game. Am I an anomoly? I can't be the only one who played like this.

How do you feel about miniatures?

I hate miniatures. I've played since 1980 and 3rd Edition was the first time I used them. Using miniatures reminds me of the combat screens in old RPGs. There's no way the players don't know somethings coming because you lay out the map and have them put their minis down. If I can figure out...

What do you love about 4e

The only thing I like is that the DMG has a somewhat fleshed out starter town and starter area. That is one thing every version of D&D could have used.

4E Combat isn't like WoW, it's like Street Fighter.

I do too and agree that these games are the closest analogues for 4E.

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

Since I've spent the weekend reading and re-reading the books I find the need to add my ideas here. 1) Every class looks EXACTLY the same. There are all just sets of powers. The Player's Handbook reads like the Advanced Squad Leader rule-book, but without the humor and soul. 2) The Dungeon...

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

No combat? No combat? That's pre-4E thinking there and you need to stop that! That is unFun, and this new edition is all about fun. Really, I want the PDFs just to count the number of times the word fun is used. It's up there with a and the I think.

Worst & most common DM mistakes

I can see your point. But those details sound pretty darned interesting. I don't know if I'm the only one, but I keep notes as my adventures go and mention these things to the DM if we ever find a slow patch. Plus I'm anti-railroading as a DM and see having most information you give as a...

Worst & most common DM mistakes

All of those have a hook that can be used for them. I agree that the things that the players will most likely focus on should be most developed, but who's to say that the player don't want to find out why the orcs have a new chief, or what is causing the feud between the farmers. I both agree...

Is 4E still D&D to you?

If that's the case, 2nd Edition will always be D&D to me. I'm different than most of the other not-completely-behind-4E people, in that I also didn't really like 3E. Still, in thinking back it was more the fluff I enjoy anyway, and once I really get into trying to make my own game in 4E I...

Is 4E still D&D to you?

You're not wrong. I think what I mean is that the shared set of assumptions about where the characters and monsters fit into the world seems missing. I guess this is mostly a fluff thing, but there seems to be less idea of how things fit into the world in the core here than in earlier editions.

Is 4E still D&D to you?

This is my biggest problem. I HATE using miniatures, it takes the focus from the game to the game board. I prefer D&D a board-less game. If I can solve that I'll be happier with the new edition. I also can't play just a simple character anymore. I loved the old Fighter. I like just hitting...

Is 4E still D&D to you?

This is a very interesting question. I've played D&D in many forms since the early 80's, and this is the first version that doesn't feel like it is D&D anymore. Don't get me wrong, it is fun. It is a fun tactical fantasy combat game with small bits of role-playing added on. This makes it...
