I never really liked alignment for characters that didn't have a connection beyond the Prime Material Plane, i.e. all but Paladins and Clerics. I'm keeping that going, in that only those who are in close worship or adherence of external alignment need an alignment.

I think there's a distinction between a gritty setting and a depressing one. Warhammer falls far, far into the latter. I like it, but I'd hate to play more than a short game in it. ASOIAF on the other hand I could spend much, much time in that setting.

I usually make most non-PC elves xenophobic in the extreme. Humans, Dwarves, and the such are considered enemies and there is often conflict. It allows me to have the best of both worlds, with those who like elves playing elves, and me killing elves.

In my game worlds (Hi, I'm Bill and I'm a worldaholic) I generally make my elves a mix between wood and grey elves. And that difference is entirely cosmetic and not functional in any way. I have no problem differentiating fluff wise, but rules wise is too much for me.

As a subscriber of Dragon from '86 and Dungeon from issue 4, I agree whole-heartedly. I'll never subscribe to the DDI out of spite for this decision, even if they offered to come to my house and play the game with me.
