D&D 5E (2014) Dealing with distracted and distracting players in an all-teen game

A few questions: 1) How long do the gaming sessions run? 2) Is there a consistent point where player attention lapses? 3) Is the story being told straight from the page or do the DM and Players have an opportunity for improvisation? 4) Is there a player who able to act as a team leader for the...

    D&D 5E (2014) CoS and Clerics

No advice, just observations. I am running CoS now and one of the PC's was a life cleric and an acolyte of Lathander. His class abilities didn't appear to be game breaking in any way, but did cause him to be the focus of a lot of the aggression. Fortunately, the player has a good sense of...

    D&D 5E (2014) "It's OK, I've got the head"

I was misquoted. What I actually said was "Head!" as i took I took our bounty's severed head from the sack I was carrying and threw it at the magistrate who had refused to pay my group the promised reward. Never renege on an agreement with a half orc barbarian- it may be the last thing you ever do.

How to get better at describing actions, not rolls

Nagol I can appreciate your position, but in most of my games, both as a GM and as player, an NPC's reaction to the party is governed by what a PC or party says and does. If a player can't provide a specific statement of intent, a GM can't determine if the skill check is successful or if the...

How to get better at describing actions, not rolls

In my first time as GM, I violated the Law of Unintended Consequences by not telegraphing a pit trap in a dungeon corridor and the players spent the following 30 minutes of the session searching every 5 feet of a 50 foot corridor. To much caution can be a game killer.

The role of organizations in RPGs

Deus ex machina Organizations are convenient ways to introduce information and other resources to PC's that would otherwise require substantial game time to acquire. Who would James Bond be without M or Q?

The (Un)Official, Metaversal Murphy's Laws of RPGs

    land value

Take a look at western China on Google Maps- the parts that aren't desert are mountains, so it's more like Australia then you might think.

    land value

I'm no expert, but I do know that it's a wicked complex equation that factors in form of government, governmental land policy, age of the country, population, age of the population, geography, etc., etc., etc. You might be able to compare France and Japan or China and Australia without getting...

    land value

IRL land values are dictated by (((highest and best use x location) x demand) x a little Kentucky windage). In other words the experts are making a best guess. Unless you want to do a lot of behind the scenes calculations, the simplest way to make it work in game is to make the land jest...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you love Awesome Names?

Dang it, now I have to build a rogue named Dashiel something or other next time I'm a player. Also, my favorite real world name, hand to the gods, is Lethal Salmon. I ran across it in the land records while doing a land title search.

    D&D 5E (2014) 3d printed dungeons

The pieces are only as generic as they are designed to be, but for those of us interested in retailing printed figures, limited runs of 1 to 20 figures is ideal. Tiles are more problematic due to the limited printer bed size, but I suspect with a little planning, a good designer could create...

    D&D 5E (2014) 3d printed dungeons

Thanks for the info. I've been considering something like this for a while, but wasn't liking the materials costs versus possible income. At those numbers, I may change my mind.

D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd Tarokka treasure locations (minor spoilers)

Remember that COS is a sandbox and no area is off limits to PC's dumb enough..., er, I mean brave enough...to venture into. I've been trying to con my players into visiting Ravenloft and the Amber Temple since they arrived in Barovia. Strahd has even invited them to "dinner" twice. The text in...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you love Awesome Names?

My user name on most forums is Swiv or SwivSnapshot and is joke name I had for a PC in an online game- a gnomish assassin with a James Bond complex ("Swivel Snapshot"), so you can guess my thoughts on the topic. I also play a wizard named Hamish Onfife in a game with a DM known for his over the...

Are you a problem player and if yes why?

Of course I'm a bad player. All players are bad players, just ask any game master. My particular form of badness takes the form of disengaging from play if the story line doesn't interest me or the GM isn't confident or well prepared.

    D&D 5E (2014) I need help with a new campaign D&D 5e

A note of caution- I played in a game with a similar concept. We started in a Gothic setting, moved on to a steam punk setting, then to conventional D&D setting and the changes made it very difficult to develop a satisfying PC. A successful design in one setting turned out to be a complete...
