D&D 5E (2014) Give me your craziest, most GONZO PC concepts!

In 4e I played a chaotic good, but delusional, Drow cleric of Sune who was a pacifist. He believed that if he could make the Drow to worship Sune, she would be his betrothed.

    D&D 5E (2014) I may have taken on a bigger challenge than i thought I did

It's easier to cut then add. Plan for a group of 8, then reduce monster/NPC count as needed or alter hit points/DC's/skill checks during encounters depending on how the PC's are doing.

D&D 5E (2014) Have you experienced very high-level (18+) play in 5e? Tell me about it!

It's been a year since I ran it, so I don't have that info anymore. Keep in mind that this was a destruction test and the PC's were optimized for combat and max hit points, so. I think the only PC with a Con score under 20 was the Sorcerer. I do remember that the Paladin had maxed his Charisma...

D&D 5E (2014) Have you experienced very high-level (18+) play in 5e? Tell me about it!

After our group finished Tyranny of Dragons, I ran a 2 night, level 20 dungeon crawl because I had doubts about the monsters in the MM scaling properly to be challenging to a high level party. 1. What was the party composition? Vengence Paladin Assassination Rogue _____ Sorceror _____ Ranger...

D&D 5E (2014) What does "Campaign" mean to you?

The Oxford English Dictionary defines Campaign as a series of military operations intended to achieve a goal, confined to a particular area, or involving a specified type of fighting. AP's are by definition campaigns. What have we all been doing???

    D&D 5E (2014) CoS - What do *animals* know?

A raven has an intelligence of 2, so most conversations with one would likely revolve around where the best worms can be found, if the church's bell tower is a better roost then the chimney of an abandoned house, or if there really is a significant difference in the airspeed of an African...

D&D 5E (2014) CoS Ideal Tarokka Reading Storywise

Don't assume your players will go to Madam Eva's camp on their own. Due to the Law of Unintended Consequences, my players bypassed the camp on the way to Vallaki and wound up at Van Richten's Tower after being chased out of Vallaki for burning down the Burgomasters mansion. They were level 5 by...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E: The Best and the Worst

Dislike- character creation, particularly backgrounds and skills. They just don't add much to the process. Like- many, many things, but I'm going to go with ease of use as my official choice.

D&D 5E (2014) How hard is it to accidentally have a TPK?

Exactly. The first time, players had a run of bad rolling at the same time I was having a run of good luck during Death House, so by the time they reached the BBEG, they were out of spell slots, hit dice and healing potions. I cut Big Bad's HP by a third and dumped most of the tricks and traps...

D&D 5E (2014) How hard is it to accidentally have a TPK?

Very easy. Since our group started playing 5e, we've had 5 TPK's- The opening encounter of HotDQ, the final encounter of RoT, and 3 in COS, although the players are only aware of one of them. The reasons cover the spectrum- good dice rolls, bad dice rolls, an inexperienced DM, impulsive players.

    D&D 5E (2014) One Legged Character

You paid a necromancer to graft the leg from a corpse onto the your body. No proficiency penalties, but at night when you are resting, it keeps trying to crawl off and find it's own body.

D&D 5E (2014) Musing on Levels and Campaign Pacing.

I’m running COS now and wound up killing two PC’s last week because they didn’t listen when an npc told them, repeatedly, they weren’t welcome in his home. I’m hoping it will be an object lesson for them…. Milestones also work well for me because I have limited prep time and mostly run...

D&D 5E (2014) Musing on Levels and Campaign Pacing.

I use milestones because I prefer a more intuitive style of play and to discourage players from being murder hobos. Many times, I have let the players level for completing a challenge with innovative role play or creative problem solving.

[Sensitive question] Is there cultural appropriation in gaming?

If you want a rational, reasoned discussion, you'll need to provide a better definition of "cultural appropriation" then a link to a Google search. One of the issues with the ongoing discussion in the media is that cultural appropriation lacks a rigorous definition- a team mascot that is...
