Running combat is a balance of keeping the game moving while allowing the players to have fun and those aren't always compatible. To point out the obvious, the more players you have, the longer a round of combat takes. Partly because of the number of players, but also because what Player 1 does...

A big thanks to the WOTC crew for coming out to Lake Geneva. I had the pleasure of sitting in on the Side Tracks workshop led by Chris Perkins, and thoroughly enjoyed myself, although another 6 hours would have been appreciated.

Tried playing without a map when playing Edge of the Empire and it constantly led to arguments between the GM and other players about what melee/short/medium/long ranges were. Tried it again when I ran our group's first 5e campaign, and the player's couldn't let go of the need for a battle map...

5e doesn't have a mark that locks down a target like 4e did, but my fighter/cleric has the Goading Strike maneuver and our paladin has Compelled Duel so the mechanic exists, you just have to find a way to convince your DM that you make a better target.

Expanded spell lists and feats so players can fine tune existing classes would be my choice.

HOTDQ was my first outing as a DM and I found the Forgotten Realms Wiki to be a big help, although the info there is a little out of date. If your players are also new, that shouldn't matter much, but if they played 3 or 3.5 there will be some confusion between the campaign map and the wiki maps.

I refuse to vote if I can only pick one. Everything but the fighter, cleric, thief and wizard can go as far as I'm concerned- they're just sub-class or multi-class variants of the big four.

It would depend on how cooperative your DM is, but I can see a rogue pull it off.
