    What have been the big innovations in RPGs?

    to me the biggest are: 1 character = 1 player and continued use of the character is possible no win although you do have sessions/events/goals otherwise you were just playing a computer game, wargame or boardgame.

    again this is another feat. you can do some of this stuff without some feats. you just do it at a penalty.

    i haven't played this edition for almost 2 years. but i'm pretty sure they had it as a magic item tack on too.

    it was designed for fun. balance was one of the elements. but clearly it is not the same balance bantered about in newer editions.

    i met all of the current gamers i game with online. and all of the ones from 1999 that i have gamed with in local campaigns of those probably only 10% classify as regular posters. but all of them have community names somewhere on the web.

    OD&D(1974). no core books at all. or at least not a phb like you are suggesting. just 3 small booklets for the referee.

    but that is what levels are all about in the first place. improved chances to hit, more hit points, or increased spells or better healing and such due to training. if you don't want to add magic items to be the equalizer for lvl increases than don't. just get rid of magic items.

    the house is potential an inheritance for one of the PCs. also the smugglers have taken a sea elf prisoner. the alignment of most of the smugglers is evil.

    it was tunnels and trolls in the movie. although, if you get the 20th anniversary dvd you will learn that the child actors actually did play D&D. they mentioned D&D in the movie Taps starring timothy hutton, tom cruise, sean penn, george c scott, etc...in 1981
