not familiar with OSRIC's actual rules and i'm not very good with rules in general. but normally oil does 1d6 when lit. and splash damage if it misses. you also had to roll a save for the container to break in 1edADnD. iirc, it takes a whole round to prep the oil for throwing and lighting it.

torch or lantern occupies a hand. important for spellcasting or trying to arm yourself with weapon or shield. torch and oil for the lantern only last so long. i don't make the players tell me when they replace a torch or refill the lantern. but i do keep track of time.

don't cheapen the deaths too much. but some ideas that can be used. evil priest animates dead. the body of the old pc is used to carryout some menial task like emptying waste or gathering wood for the priest. priest is slain by other monster or rival or adventuring party. animated corpse then...

i did. it took years of wading thru 2edADnD and d02 fanbois but i was able to form a group. you just need to be vigilant and have patience. stick to your guns. plug away. edit: if you wanna play OD&D(1974) meet me at Gen Con. :D
