Lack of Evolution in Pre-Made Adventure Presentation

The tools for running adventures HAVE changed, they are just not packaged as an all in one product. Lets say you are running Curse of Strahd. WotC has the adventure in dead tree format. Want player friendly maps to project? Mike Schley has those available. Want adventure-specific music and...

D&D 5E (2014) Should All Subclasses Be Gained at 1st Level?

I just start my games at level 3 so it doesn't really matter to me!

D&D 5E (2014) New DM with campaign anxiety

Sounds like you have some cool ideas. First, focus on the next adventure rather than trying to map out the whole campaign in advance. Doing a ton of planning in advance is unnecessary, and stories often go in unexpected directions, so it can be counterproductive. Sounds like your PC's start...

D&D General Back to First Principles

One of the best campaigns I ever ran was a Rules Cyclopedia-era basic game. Started with Eye of Traldar then Night's Dark Terror and finished with some stuff I cobbled together from Dungeon Magazine and Against the Slavelords (as the Iron Ring slavers). At that point Basic was decidedly the...

    More cool geek stuff

The whole clip is titled Henry Cavill, Tom Holland, and Zendaya talk about their nerdy hobbies. So yeah, it implies Warhammer is nerdy, but no more so than doing jigsaw puzzles (Holland) or knitting (Zendaya). Also Spiderman asks Superman if he can come over to play Warhammer sometime, which...

The TTRPG Revival of PC Bases, Strongholds, and Communities

Matt Coleville's Strongholds & Followers for 5E was a 2 Million dollar Kickstarter. It is rooted in the old school AD&D concepts, but allows for strongholds to come into the campaign at lower levels.

TSR TSR3.5 Launches IndieGogo Campaign to "Stop" WotC

So let's recap: TSR wants to protect freedom of expression in games by suing WotC.....over an opinion WotC expressed in their games. Yeah, that sounds like a good cause, let me go get my checkbook.....

D&D 5E (2014) Silvery Barbs, how would you fix it? Does it need fixing?

Why would I want to fix it when I can just give it to every NPC caster from here on out and enjoy those sweet, sweet player tears?

    D&D 5E (2014) How crunchy is D&D 5E

Crunchier than a soft taco but not as crunchy a a hard-shell taco. About like a chip that is at the bottom of the nacho pile. So I said 5.

Payn's Ponderings; The problems with Prequels

Well sequels are generally worse than the original as well. The difference is that we have a LOT more sequels out there, so it is possible to find some (Empire, Aliens, T2) that prove sequels can work in theory, even if they often don't in practice. With prequels you have a much smaller sample...

    D&D 5E (2014) Charm, the evil spells

In my experience PC often engage in bad behavior - its where the whole "murder hobo" trope comes from. Most groups I have played with will use trivial excuses to start a fight so they can kill stuff and take their stuff (maybe you should have gotten the orc's side of the story before invading...

D&D General Spells That Are Also Great Names

Trudy "True" Strike could work for a boxer (or pro bowler for that matter) Divine Favor would be a great stage name for a stripper or drag queen

D&D General The DM Should Only Talk 30% of the Time... Agree or Disagree?

I think the better takeaway here is that the DM should outsource what they can to players, rather than trying to come up with a particular percentage of time they should be talking. A couple of things I have seen successfully outsourced to players: -doing a recap of previous sessions -looking...

Games Workshop notes that space fascism would be bad

The Imperium is bad? Nonsense. Next your going to try to tell me that a sword wouldn't be an effective weapon against space tanks and robots with plasma guns.

Combat Spaces: Squares, Hexes, or Zones?

Overall squares work best with most games IMHO. The only real drawback is diagonal movement - you either need to do the moderately fiddley 1.5 move (Pathfinder) or just ignore geometry and treat movement in any direction the same (5E). Neither approach is ideal, but both work fine. Hexes...

D&D General Wizards are not rational/scientists

Well wizards are pretend, so no one can tell you your ideas about them are wrong. To me the fact that having a high intelligence makes you better at casting wizard spells suggests it IS about being able to rationally comprehend something highly complex, rather than just trippin' balls and...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC Strixhaven/Kickstarter Red Dawn

The law has always made a distinction between an "idea" (a wizard school) and the "expression" of an idea (Hogwarts). You can't copyright an idea, just the expression of that idea. As an example: for all the ideas that D&D lifted from Tolkien, the only things they had to change were some of...

Pathfinder 1E My players ask about CR...

I wouldn't give them a CR, but I do think the PC's would be able to generally assess the strength of a foe in-game. So I think it would be fair to tell them something along the lines of "this looks like a dangerous foe, but you think you could probably best it after a difficult fight."

D&D General Fantasy Football (just for fun)

Wow, I remember that picture from back in the day. Never played the game, but loved the pic. Here is a couple more: The Washington Redcaps (usually just called the Feywild Football Team) The Buffalo Bill-Guisarmes The Kansas City Bugbear Chiefs The Dallas Minotaurs

    D&D General Inherently Evil?

I don't think it is hard to imagine a sentient fantasy species that was incapable of experiencing empathy or comprehending human morality, or even one that experienced pleasure (endorphins or the magical equivalent) from inflicting suffering. Whether or not that that makes them "inherently evil"...
