But you can only use them to mail letters to Waterdeep.

How long are your gaming sessions?

The game I play in is 4 hours. I tend to have less stamina when I am running things, so the game I DM for is scheduled for 3 hours.

    Gaming Dollars Spent in 2023

This post made me go back and look at my own hobby spending in 2023. While I did not track it at the time, I buy stuff from from a pretty limited number of sources so it is not too hard to recreate after the fact. Physical books ~$310 I think this is higher than usual in this category as I...

What is the largest animal that you think you could beat in a fight?

Manatees are pretty big. I think I could probably take one of those in the unlikely event the manatee and I could not resolve our differences peacefully.

WotC Peril in Pinebrook: A new free WotC starter adventure PDF on D&D Beyond

Yeah, I saw this up on the WotC site recently, I think it is interesting how they streamlined some of the class abilities and spells for new players, as well as changing everything that doesn't use a d6 or d20 into a fixed number (e.g. magic missiles do 3 points of damage each).

What Is Your Favorite Campaign Setting?

Greyhawk is the one that I have the most affection for. We ran most of our games in Greyhawk "back in the day" and it was the home to all those great 1E adventures, so it really has the nostalgia factor going for it for me. Even just on the merits I still think it is the best "vanilla" setting...

    D&D 5E (2014) Cartomancer Feat

Definitely a badly written spell. However, I would rule that the slot is expended when you flourish the card as that is when you actually cast the spell ("you can use a bonus action to flourish the card and cast the spell within"). I have no idea what "imbue" means mechanically, but when you...

D&D General When do you overrule RAW?

If it favors the PCs I tend to be pretty liberal with letting the rule of cool override RAW. If it favors the monsters I would override RAW only if it was a pretty clear case. The example in the OP seems to fit, as it is reinforcing the idea that the monster is big and powerful beyond what PCs...

Reaper Minis debuts its own OGL-based RPG system: Dungeon Delvers

The rules and adventures have been up on the Reaper Minis website for quite some time (beta rules say they were posted Dec. 2022) - only the Kickstarter is new. So this may just be to do a print version of the game.

    D&D 5E (2024) Should poison spray be a cone?

That rule only applies if it is a circular area of effect. DMG p. 251. Areas of effect need to have their origin at an intersection of squares preventing you from covering partial squares with a cube AoE.

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) Balancing Gritty Rest

The group I am a player in has used some version of this rule for the past four campaigns, spanning over four years of weekly games. It works great and I highly recommend it. I am not using it in the group I DM for just because it would not work with the pacing of the published campaign I am...

    Let's talk Virtual Tabletops!

FG is my favorite. It has a ton of functionality and supports a number of systems. The down side is that there is a pretty steep learning curve starting out - if you can get over that curve it is great, but lots of people who try to pick it up on their own never do. Also the licenses are...

D&D 5E (2014) Restrictive DMs and player enjoyment

Personally I enjoy making a character that is tailored to the game world and campaign more than just completely open ended character creation. Ideally that process is not just restrictive, but one that provides interesting ideas for character creation as well - for example, organizations that a...

How Do You Like Your Extents of Progression?

Competent to heroic but stopping short of super heroic. In D&D terms you start at level 3 and end up around level 7. In movie terms you start out as John McClain in Die Hard (a tough cop who can defeat a bigger group with cleaver tactics and luck) and but peak well before you become John...

D&D 5E (2024) Are You Happy with the Selection of Subclasses?

Not exactly what I would have gone with, but its fine. Sorcerer is the only one that seems really off. There are several others where I would have swapped out one of the choices (no hexblade?) but I think most of the picks are reasonable.

D&D 5E (2014) Planescape shows up in the wild. Tease from Chris Perkins.

Yes, exactly. If he hadn't done it the internet would have exploded with people complaining about his absence ruining the whole thing. Mediocre Diterlizzi art is on Diterlizzi. Not even asking him to do art is WotC "being out of touch with the real Planescape fans" and "not understanding why...
