Roll20 & DTRPG Are Teaming Up

Well Roll20 did have a game called Burn Bryte that was designed specifically to be played on a VTT but I haven't played it and I am not sure it makes the full use out of a VTT functionality. I do agree that there is a lot of untapped potential to do stuff on VTTs that would be too cumbersome in...

D&D 5E (2014) A campaign that lasts an entire (in-game) lifetime... what would this look like?

The CRPG Wildermyth does this pretty well. Essentially the characters have a campaign to vanquish a specific threat, then experience "years of peace" before another threat emerges. In later campaigns the older characters are joined by younger, less experienced characters who will become the...

D&D 5E (2014) Casting Tasha's Mind Whip on enemy who is under Crown of Madness

Mind Whip says if the target fails its save "it must choose whether it gets a move, an action, or a bonus action; it gets only one of the three." Based on this language the target could choose to keep its move, meaning it would negate the effect of Crown of Madness since then it wouldn't have an...

D&D General What is the purpose of race/heritage?

I have to wonder how much these reasons are going to change with recent (and presumably future) changes to the way 5E handles races. With floating ASIs and Custom Lineage, there is rarely a mechanical benefit to picking any race over CL. WotC also seems to be de-emphasizing races as cultures...

Too Much Effort to Make New Characters?

I would definitely sit down with the group and have a discussion about what everyone's expectations and interests were. If it is simply that they are inexperienced players who find making a new character challenging that is something that can be addressed in various ways. Some players like low...

D&D 5E (2014) Rules question - Dissonant Whispers movement with Warcaster on OA

RAW the forced movement comes from their reaction, and does not use any of the creature's regular movement. I don't see any other rule which would change this just because the reaction occurs during their normal movement. So #2.

    D&D 5E (2014) Weapon and Armor Types

While I agree with the design goals expressed here, I worry that there is a pretty easy workaround for PCs - carrying multiple weapon types. Every Str-based character is going to walk around with a battleaxe, warhammer, and (ironically) rapier (which can also use Str). Every Dex-based...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why AD&D Rocks and 3e - 5e Mocks all over AC...

This. AD&D reduced your movement by HALF if you were wearing plate, scale, or splint armor. See 1E DMG p. 27. That is way more restrictive than taking away your DEX bonus to AC. If anything this video debunks the idea that heavy armor slows your movement. I'm skeptical it proves that your...

5E burnout - looking for a summer RPG

I'd recommend Frontier Space, a d% game inspired by the old Star Frontiers. While I don't know if it is technically "rules lite" it is less crunchy than 5e and is essentially just rolling percentile dice vs. a skill or ability number. Another option would be Mecha Hack which is - as you...

Out with the old (Game design traditions we should let go)

I'd say dice pool mechanics (as in roll x dice to hit a target of y at least z times). They are clunky and I have never seen one that accomplished anything in terms of probability you couldn't get from a regular roll vs. a target number.

D&D General The Future is Now! 3D AI-run VTT on Kickstarter

Seems like a pretty ambitious project for a two person company that has never put out a product before.

D&D General How do you schedule your D&D sessions?

Set days in both of my groups. With the smaller group (four players) we just cancel if anyone can't make the regularly scheduled game. With my bigger group (six players) we will go forward if only one person can't make it, but cancel for two or more absences.

D&D 5E (2014) How many players would use a service like this

Are you also offended by the concept of restaurants? Has it destroyed people's willingness to throw dinner parties for their friends? Of course not - lots of people are happy to cook and entertain friends for free. But there is also room for people to cook meals upon request for strangers...

So the Hand of Vecna is now the Infinity Gauntlet?

    Primer for first-time RPGers?

If you are just looking for very basic primers on what an RPG is Roll20 has a short summary. Vox has a longer video specifically on D&D - it is a bit cheesy, but does a good job of explaining not just what RPGs are, but why they are fun. For a more in-depth explanation of how to start...

Is Tolerance a Lawful thing ?

I think tolerance (in the sense of accepting all racial, religious, gender identity, orientations, etc. as equal) is "good" on the D&D alignment scale. Lawful and Chaotic characters would have differing ideas on how to promote this though. Lawful Good societies would promote tolerance with...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you have to declare a rest before the rest?

Sure, I think as long as you are actually resting you get the benefit, regardless of whether you declared or intended to "short rest." The "short rest" is obviously an arbitrary game concept - if you spend 59 minutes eating, drinking, bandaging, wounds, etc. you get no benefit, but one more...

D&D 5E (2014) Wild Beyond the Witchlight + Out of the Abyss

Personally I thought that the second half of OotA was by far the weaker part. There is just not much to it for an arc that is supposed to take characters from 8th to 15th level. I thought it had a couple of great scenes, but just didn't have enough actual material to support what was trying to...

The Legend of Vox Machina would be cool if someone could figure how to translate it to an RPG.

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk: Why We Need Mo' Oerth by 2024

I would agree that people overlook the historical importance of GH to the game. With Saltmarsh and TftYP Wizards talked a lot about the continuity of experience and how cool it was that middle school kids just picking up the game for the first time could run the same adventures that kids...
