    Tails that wag the dog

My thread on cleaning old game stuff reminded me of a case where I wanted to preface a published item with my own start rather than use the publishers intended start and ended up creating something far more complicated than the published material. In this case, I liked the Under world modules...

    The heartbreak of garage cleaning

I finally tossed my old maps to "Morkhelek" today while cleaning the garage. It was in a small suitcase I've been lugging around for literally 30+ years. It was something like 30 sq ft of maps of a part above ground, part below ground city I did in my highschool years. It was a huge project at...

Playing a character while DMing. Yes or No?

I do it at times. It depends on the circumstances. I certainly did it when ref'ing my son and friend for similar reasons as yours and it worked fine. In the main campaign, we sometimes set it up to co-ref with the ref swapping at certain times. In some such campaigns, the ref may play his...

What setting would grab your attention?

And a big 'oops' on the thread title... :erm:

What setting would grab your attention?

There have been a few folks asking people what they think of an idea for a campaign. To turn the question around, what sort of campaign pitch would grab your attention? What would make you say "oh! I really want to try that!" For me, I've always had a thing for flying mounts and flying castles...

What Should You Be Able to Accomplish in Four Hours?

Four hours would be tight for our group. Even trimming out the normal non-D&D chatter, we'd be hard pressed to get in 2 combats. It isn't so much that the combats take a super long time, although they can at times but that there is typically a fair amount of RP and decision making to do out of...

    The name "Xi"

I would wonder why the ref is using a chinese pronunciation but probably not voice it. If he revealed a good in-game reason, then no problems. If it is arbitrary than one could legitimately expect lots of jokes about it for a while: "my character's name is spelled 'Sam' but it's pronounced 'spud'".

    A nasty trick I'm considering

You could try the LOTR movie trick they used to make the hobbits seem small though played by full sized folks- camera angles and over-sized props. If the beholder wants folks to think he is a full sized beholder, maybe they see him first through a window or another restrictive view and he is...

How old is your gaming group?

Three of our current five players have been together 16 years. One is fairly new (2-3 years). The other was 1 when this group got together and started watching about age 6-7 and playing a little after that with some help from his dad. We've had other players come and go, some for just a campaign...

Help me decide what the incompetent Mayor will do

Probably have him lead a disastrous expedition against the goblins. Or maybe have him hire some help to deal with the problem that results in a new ruler in the town or the invitation of a vampire or something unsavory :) It depends how subtle you want to make his ill-management be. He could...

Cyclone Scenario - What would you do?

Assuming are asking what would I do as a ref: I don't find playing FEMA all that exciting so probably would not put the players in the roll of rescuing random folks. Seems like it could get tedious. After the first rescue, I might simply abstract it out. "You want to rescue folks? Okay you...

    What's your sign?

Signs can be fun. You can go the MOrrowind CRPG route and have signs give PCs special powers or aptitudes. You can have them affect how they do on various days. I tried something like that a long time ago but IIRC it kind of petered out. As defined, it was easy to forget and was thus forgotten...

Would You Play In This Game?

I would need to know more before committing but on the pitch as presented, no I would not play in it. Some thoughts so that might help hone your pitch for players: Being human only is somewhat restrictive (less so in a very human centric world like yours). It wouldn't bother me in this...

Where did all the drow go?

Definitely over-exposed, plus I find them a bit too tied to a particular setting although I like the basic concept. I've always assumed they were inspired by the norse dark elves (svartalfar) and as created they are certainly entertaining enough. But interestingly, if they were inspired by the...

    In defense of 4E

I see 4E getting a lot of flack here. For those who have tried it and don’t like it, I’m sure you have good reasons for it. I’m not really trying to convert anyone but I think, at least as an academic exercise, I’d like to try to provide a counterpoint. Overall, my group and I like the system...

    What's the problem with railroading?

I think there are some players and refs who feel something more on the sandbox end of things is a purer, better form of gaming but that doesn't mean most gamers necessarily subscribe to that. I think the sandbox crowd tends to be more vocal but not very prevalent. Published scenarios remain...

    Saying "no" and equality

If a ref is comfortable with that, I have no issues with doing something like letting psionics in under another "skin" but one of the reasons I really don't like psionics as a ref, aside from aesthetics, at least in the D&D systems I am aware of, it introduces a different game mechanic. There...

    Storytelling balance: Advice needed

It's always a good idea to have some encounters worked up, both combat and RP, that you can drop in as needed. And if the players show a particular interest in them or handle them in an open ended way, it can always provide the next arc or theme. Even if they finish the current thread, you...

    A small border trading post

In addition to the other suggestions, I'd make sure they have a refugee: a block house, stone tower, cave, etc.

Playing music while playing a RPG

We play music fairly often. What works best for us are movie soundtracks. Since you can buy individual tracks these days it wouldn't be too hard to put your own compilation together without buying too many albums.
