    The Niche Protection Poll

The thief/illusionist and fighter/thief were both awesome. 3e never really duplicated them perfectly, I agree. No, traps and SA in and of themselves aren't enough. I would have hoped that some of the PF changes would favor the rogue, such as being able to SA more things and some of the combat...

    The Niche Protection Poll

Also, just to go back to this notion and the role/niche for a second, this was one of the ways to play a thief. Other ways did not include this notion at all. If anything, the rogue served to broaden the class's scope and further deemphasize the whole striking from stealth angle. The PF rogue...

    The Niche Protection Poll

I don't see a ton of rogues either. At least, not as much as I would like. I did a really substantial PF/TB/UA rogue rewrite recently and it's yet to see use as anything other than an NPC. I think the last rogue I saw was a rogue/warlock. If anything, I think the ranger is the one that...

    The Niche Protection Poll

I said that the good old 2e thief doesn't. In 3e, I see a fair amount of feinting and flanking. Regardless of whether we're talking rogues or not, there are a lot more skill checks than attack rolls in my game. Rogues get a lot of use out of stealth/perception and social skills in my game...

    The Niche Protection Poll

I haven't found that to be the case at all. Rogues work perfectly fine with or without those things.

    The Niche Protection Poll

Striking hard from stealth; not striking hard during an active battle when you're already been seen. Even the addition of flanking to sneak attack (one which I've backtracked on to an extent for my own games), as opposed to pure old school backstab which requires the target to be unaware of you...

    The Niche Protection Poll

Only in the sense that the concept of the class was built around doing that. Rogues are versatile. Rogues improvise. Rogues dip into other niches. It's pretty much the definition of what a rogue is. But of course it isn't. As I've noted elsewhere, UMD is precisely what it's meant to be: a niche...

GAME OF THRONES #6:The Laws of God and Men ACT 45 Chapter 4-2014

It's odd to me that these episodes seem to be getting shorter and shorter. Tyrion's moment in the spotlight was great, though one wonders about this whole trial by combat thing. I mean, if he has the option of doing it and throwing Bronn out like he did before, why not just say that at the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Simulation vs Game - Where should D&D 5e aim?

That's a matter of opinion to be sure. They all feel pretty meaningless to me. And we're supposed to believe that King Robert died in a hunting accident.

    D&D 5E (2014) Simulation vs Game - Where should D&D 5e aim?

Indeed. I think character-driven fiction has been done to death, particularly in this genre. I also think roleplaying games run much better when people accept a social contract that does not treat the in-game outcomes for their character as being of any special significance.

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

PF PA does kind of suck. They really should have better saves. I think one of the benefits of adding a medium progression is that you can bump them up without going that far. That might be the only thing that could ever make it work.

Pathfinder 1E Alchemist: Man of Science or Fledgling Caster

I'd drop the Alchemist. It's too magic-y and not worth the trouble to fix.

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Encounter Difficulty?

The only way to reliably determine the difficulty for any game is manually. That basically means ignoring the CR ratings, looking at the actual statistics and the context in which they will be used, and making a call. Using the PF CR's will usually result in trivially difficult encounters, but...

The solar panel road, dream or the future?

Just what we need, another reason to make traffic jams even more wasteful. I mean, even if we replaced our major thoroughfares around these parts with solar panels, they wouldn't generate a ton of energy because I don't think they get much sun through all those cars.

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

That's probably the best class for a lot of things. That's a good point. I think durations should be like spell ranges: short-medium-long. Optionally, you can look up some exact timeframe, but usually, that's all you need to know. Big on the niche protection, eh? I'd put cleric in with sorcerer...

    How do you measure "Timing"?

To me, that's somewhere between Wis and Dex. For a movement skill the most logical thing to do is use the skill ranks and make it Dex-based if it isn't already.

    D&D 5E (2014) Simulation vs Game - Where should D&D 5e aim?

There isn't really anything to facilitate it either. If the NPC doesn't define himself according to the four combat roles, there's no class for him. Part of what 3e in particular did is design classes meant to fill broader roles in the world. Both the flavor text and the mechanics themselves...

    The Niche Protection Poll

Well, I think that last one is what does it. 2nd level spells suck, and just memorizing Invis is usually a perfectly reasonable thing to do. So not much reason to use a wand at all. I do recall being very concerned about those sorts of things when I ran a naval campaign. I don't think I ever had...

    Evil saturated area

BoVD has a section on that. PF has haunts, which convert easily.

    Thoughts on non-epic progression

Given prestige classes, it's definitely doable to use that fix for class abilities. The problem is that you probably need to stop the pre-epic BAB and save progressions, or characters will diverge too far form each other.
