    Pathfinder 1E Advice for a plot-device as a Spell?

Honestly, this is a contradiction. If you've decided that they're going to fall asleep, simply do that, possibly having them roll a save but never identifying what for. That is by the book; the book gives the DM blanket authority. I'm not sure what you would gain by writing a spell that serves...

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

You're right, it's completely irrelevant, and all the points about how PF plays have nothing to do with it and are wrong regardless of what some unrelated 4e flavor text says.

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

No, it isn't. The effect of the skill is not magical, and there's no text that says that it is. Another step further down the chain of events, the effect of the item being activated, is magical. And again, if your fighter has a weapon that produces a magic effect, that doesn't mean that base...

However, in common usage, the term "magical" can apply to a variety of things that may not even be objectively all that extraordinary. Some people think microwaves are magical. Or sunsets.

Use Magic Device isn't magical either. It's a skill, not a spell, or spell-like or supernatural ability (that's an objective fact!). A rogue using the skill to activate a wand of Acid Arrow or a Scroll of Passwall is not using a magical ability any more so than a fighter is when he swings a +1...

I'm not an expert, but you'll find plenty of people saying otherwise. To say that there wasn't sufficient evidence to win a legal case against someone who is rich and a lawyer is not the same thing as saying there was insufficient evidence for institutional discipline. The NBA's rules give the...

There are certainly problems with it, but the fixes to those problems would involve going a completely different direction than 4e went, and their desire to maintain compatibility is certainly justifiable.

I think it's a good move. However, it's been rightly noted that this owner had a long history of misconduct, some of it discriminatory in nature, and was in substance a terrible sports owner whose franchise was the laughingstock of the sport for most of his tenure. There were a variety of other...

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

It depends on what degree of statement you're making; if you're saying a wizard is simply better than a fighter, or that primary spellcasting effectively obsoletes d20-based skill and combat prowess, that isn't really supported by anything on the page or through the open playtest process. So...

To me, I think it's probably selective enforcement. From what I've seen, these things arise from either incomplete understanding or utilization of the rules as they are. Perhaps it's about generating wordy and circuitous and charged arguments out of seemingly innocuous topics. We have more...

Do you think the OGL was a good idea?

Pathfinder is a 3e/4e hybrid. It's got rage powers and grit, a condensed skill system, at-will cantrips, and more. It's got about as much of 4e as the market will take, as its 4e-like elements are also inevitably controversial. Independent of licensing, I don't think there's anything in the...

Do you think the OGL was a good idea?

I think we'd be playing Trailblazer. Or just 3.5. I don't think anything was ever going to bring 4e to the people it didn't get to.

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

The witch is quite strong; the spell list of course is taken down from the wizard's a notch, but hexes are very nice, and it's really the most dual purpose class in terms of offensive magic and healing that I've ever seen. I've used it (though only as an NPC). I actually should do a rewrite of...

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

Just to go back to this for a second, if you instead replaced this with a druid, a witch, a barbarian, and a ranger, that group is actually better than the control group. The largest actual class imbalance (one that has carried forward through several versions of the game) is, somewhat oddly...

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

It's a game mechanic describing a fantastical world. There's no "objective" truth to be found. Subjectively, a power has more in common with a spell than a magic item does. In any case, calling it magic or not is fluff, not mechanics. Mechanically, a 4e rogue is, as noted above, a striker with...

It sounds like going to a sports message board to post your problems about football and someone threadcraps it with endless diversions about how quarterbacks are "unbalancing". Neither would changing them to healing surges and powers, then. It's essentially the same thing.

Okay, you've posted your problem, so I'll fix it. Rewrite the flavor text for wands so they aren't magical, and change Use Magic Device to "Use Power Surge". Now, the rogue is no longer a pretend wizard. Problem solved! Uh, okay. No more than smart rogues, fighters, rangers, maguses (?)...

I don't particularly disagree with any of that, but using 4e as an example to reinforce that (apparently inapplicable) distinction was the argument that I was responding to. That is to say, 4e is not a valid example for how PF or any other version of D&D would analyze the relative capacities of...

    schools of magic

This is largely a consequence of 3e boosting the various defensive options while keeping the existing damaging spells from earlier editions. Energy resistance is so useful and common, SR is common, saves scale so easily and so cheaply, evasion is so easy to acquire, and so on and so forth, that...
